Alright folks, thread description is self-explanatory.

How do you explain knives (specifically "expensive" knives), to "non-knife" people?

Nothing to explain...They know what they are for and that materials get progressively more expensive and rare, they just dont care.

Take people who collect shoes, or pottery, or baskets...dont need to explain to me, its just not my interest, but i still use them functionally and dont care about the quality that much.

I don’t think there’s is anything to explain.... since in fact it is not completely rational :)

Actually for most of us knives have become a kind of hobby
As any hobby it is about interest, feelings, self representation and marginally about cutting things ;)

If I come back in time I would have said that more than $30 in a knife is stupid as you can get a SAK and an Opinel for less than that.
I am a little bit into the survivalist philosophy so after a time I decided to test something different even if it was more expensive.
Then I realized their are differences in quality and I have been curious to try more... and so in and so in...

There is nothing to explain. I can share the story but not “explain” because that is not completely rational.

I think it is better not to speak of prices first but to give the person an experience , if he has an interest... it happened to me this week end in new year eve.
A friend has just got a knife, he paid $40 for is knife and was very proud to show it to me because he knows I have “some” knives.
We discussed steels and we ended up looking at my knives to give exemples and details on the construction. It was a shock for him and now he asks me to sell him my 0550 gen 3 with custom sculpted cf scales and custom blue titanium LBS in LNIB condition for $200.
It was love at first touch between him and this knife ;)

I don’t talk knives with non knives people. That is easier.
If someone needs advice or looks information I a happy to share experience and knowledge... for non knives people I always have a SAK or an Opinel to borrow in case of need ;)

Rolex vs Timex... Most people can understand that.

Good call, apt analogy.

I'm going to do the same thing, carry an Opinel to lend out.

I wouldn't bother trying. To me, it's like how I can't understand the popularity of superhero movies. I have no interest in seeing any of them and there is no argument that would convince me otherwise. I imagine that analogy is similar to trying to explain the lure of knives to someone who is uninterested in them.

If they ask I will explain . If there is no chance then......

I usually compare my $80 HTC Android to their $600 I phone or Galaxy and then they get it.

Luckily I live in an area where many people own knives and guns. I will never try to convince an adult they should carry a knife are a life time of not doing so. It never happens.

First I'd ask what brand of clothing they generally buy, that indicates a baseline for the conversation and qualifies comparisons.
I carry for personal protection and other duties I may need it for.
The few I collect are for the art of a handmade item by another human. Unquestionably functional art which is the best kind of art.
It is better to have a knife and not need it.

I don’t bother as saying things like “ this knife will last a lifetime” and “it is sharper” don’t register with most people.

Case in point, a friend has a Buck 110 ($45US in Canada) and a Buck 119 ($55US here’s). For about $100 he has TWO ledgendary knives that come with a lifetime warranty. He uses both all the time and has for almost a decade. Hard for him to comprehend why anyone would buy a $200+ knife.

To each their own, but I avoid the frustration and if asked how much a knife I am carrying costs, I just say “ a lot”.

Corolla versus Lexus..... both drive just fine and last. Just depends on what you want, can afford, or want to afford. I don't really try to explain expensive knives to non-knife people other than to use an analogy they are likely to understand.

We can be a strange bunch at times. Touching up knives when they don't need it. The wife thinks I'm a nut when she gets up early sunday morning and im stropping the knives. Lol. The horror.... The horror...
