There are three signs on the Knives.

1 Maker's initials.

2 Makers's logo.

3 Star is a mark designating our knife makers, Himalayan Imports.

There are two more signs on H.I. knives.

1 H. I. mark.

2 U. B. mark.

:o

Thanks Yangdu. It is nice to know what everything means, especially when someone new asks ~ then we can look very well educated and worldly.

Many signs are reaccuring throughout history and different cultures.

I like the little sun.

So "New Mexico" is the #3 "Star" mark?

Sorry, the New Mexico "Zia" or Sun has 4 rays not 3.

Unless HI can make a "Zia Edition Khukuri" :D

History:

The Zia believed that the giver of all good gave them gifts in groups of four. These gifts are:
The four directions - north, east, south and west.
The four seasons - spring, summer, fall and winter.
The day - sunrise, noon, evening and night.
Life itself - childhood, youth, middle years and old age.
All of these are bound by a circle of life and love, without a beginning or end.

WELCOME to the forum ALBPM! Glad to see another NMexican on the forum.

Khukuris can be ADDICTIVE. I'm on the 12 step program for them. LOL

On all other forums, I'm LCSNM, except this one.

Dale

ALBPM all of the HI Khukuris I have with the star/sun mark has four rays. That's why we were all calling it the New Mexico Sun.;) :D
The 3 that everyone is using above is because it was number 3 in the list.

Unless something new has came about I know nothing of, that happens more frequently than I like to admit. :o ;)

Ok, I see.....DOH!!!.........LOL!!!

4's are a good thing from the "Giver of all Good "

I'll look at mine again tonight. I thought I saw three rays on the Sirupati I got last night.

Now I have one more thing for my wife to get mad at me for :D ;)

Hi lcs37, how do the wood handles hold up in our dry climate? Do you have any special treatment for them..?

Paul

Handles have held up good. I've settled on a mixture of Turpentine/Tru-oil/Boiled Linseed Oil, applying coats as necessary.
The horn handles , usually a light coat of baby mineral oil. I've used Mane 'n Tail Hoofmaker from the cosmetics dept of Walgreens, Hooflex and many other ideas from the learned pros on this forum.

I haven't looked at them lately, except for the one I carry in my truck and hang in the garage. I need to do that.
Kumar Kobras make excellent snake killers.

Somewhere on here, if not pruned, is an inventory list of my collection. I have a few.

I'm a caregiver for my 89 year old Mom, live in Edgewood.

We all let our arses overload our minds in our excitement of khukuris Paul. think nothing of it as we're all used to it.;) :D

And indeed there may only be 3 rays on your Sirupati. Damned kamis are always doing things to confuse the white, red, and other colors of monkeys in the HI Forum. :( :o ;) :D

Paul, the wood handles will shrink even here in Oklahoma's humid climate to a point, don't know what it may do in NM.
One of the things I do when I get a khukuri I'm going to use and sometimes even when I'm not is to take a file, turn it on its corner and file a small triangular groove right at the intersection of the buttcap and the wood.
Of course this is after I file the buttcap flat with the handle if the wood has shrunk so that the buttcap is higher than the wood.
You have to be careful when doing this to make sure you put most of the pressure on the metal buttcap so you will keep the groove even on each side with the wood being so much softer than the metal.

Filing the buttcap flat with the wood and then filing groove does a couple of things.
One, it makes the khukuri look nicer and it helps keep the sharp edge of the metal from cutting you.
Two, with the triangular groove cut at the intersection it also removes the sharp edge on the metal forever and also if the wood does happen to shrink further it usually isn't much and you don't have to mess with that part of the khukuri ever again. :D

Apparently Bura only needs two rays to get the point across:D

lcs, I have it on good authority, that your list was the REASON for the pruning. "a few"! Forsooth!

I went to WoodWorkers Supply on the way home tonight. I got some Tung oil, Natural color Watco and a cleaner called OxiSolv Blade and Bit Cleaner.

The "OxiSolv Blade and Bit Cleaner" is non toxic, biodegradible and cleaned up the blades and handles very nicely. So, the handles for the 18" Sirupati and 17" BGR Villager are soaking up some Tung oil as I type this :D

Seems that both are made by Bura and have 2 rays on the sun. We better get word to him that 4 rays are strong medicine for Native Americans and New Mexicans

My Bura Sirupati has two rays in each cardinal direction as well.

Well four in each cardinal direction would be the best but I'll settle for two in each cardinal direction. At least the Four Winds are represented.

Did y'all know that most ndn nations have seven directions?
It would be impossible to put them all on a material object like a khukuri though.

I think the first khukuri I got with the Sun symbol on it was my 21"+ Chitlangi. The very first HI Chitlangi and the very first HI Khukuri made by Jag and Prem whom were hired away from the old Shop 1 to BirGhorka by Gelbu.:D
I don't know what happened to them but they were dayumed good kamis!!!!
