I had one of these knives when I was growing up and would love to find out some info if u guys have any. I know they where made by Explorer in the 80's and mine was the camoflage version hollow handle survival knife. I think it was called the wilderness. Please, let me know anything about this company or where I can get one.

Hi,

Explorer was a imported house brand of Guttman Cutlery, which was sold off in the 90's. Sold to the folks who own the Junglee brand.

I don't think Explorer is used much, if at all on new knives. The good news is that a lot of the Explorer survival knives were made, and some leg work should find you one on Ebay, sometimes NIB for $35-50 bucks.

Check out the Parker, and Taylor knife companies out also, as all of these companies contracted their work out to the same Japanese factories.

:).

I have one of these in black. Had it for years. The compass turned into powder and the contents of the "survival" kit are long gone (along with the sheath and stone). Don't know what kind of blade steel that is, but it takes a violent edge.

No pic but I did an Ebay search and came up with this, which is just like mine except mine has sawteeth on the spine and a slightly different blade style. Mine also has finger grooves.

Yep, it sounds like u have my knife in black. I would luv to find a mint one in camo or black. Any more ideas? Do u think there are any knife shops that deal in 1980's knives out there?

You never knew what you were going to get with that line. I bought an "Explorer" lockback, made in Japan of course. It was 3/16" at the spine and hollow-ground. It took and held a wicked edge and locked up solid as a rock. It was, unfortunately, stolen when my car was burgled. I have looked for it's twin ever since without luck. OTOH, I have seen "explorer" survival knives that were junk --handles broke off at very low loads, soft steel, cheapo plastic sheaths.

Think I'll do a search for that Explorer lock-back.
