I'm thinking of carving a handle out of some wood from my local area. I have to season my cat iron today and I though it would be an excuse to get out of the house for a while and whittle away the hours haha. Any tips? This would be my first time trying my hand at something like this. Also I have zero experience in tree identification.

Well first off, the wood would have to be dried throughly. Otherwise it can warp and split.

Regarding the whittling of a set of scales, sand the insides of the scales flat on sandpaper on a tile.
Then mark the stock tang on the wood with a pencil and you will be leaving the rest of the material for support within the handle.
Carve around your marks to make the internal part stick beyond the scales then later sand that to flush with the stock handle.
Create the other side keeping the inside flush to the stock handle, no internal posts or valleys.

Doing this would leave you just to drill and countersink your holes, mount the scales and then all you would have left to do would be shape the rough with sand paper.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Keep us posted with this project. It has been something I am interested in doing.

I really want to go ahead and do this. Anyone know how long wood would have to dry in order to season it properly?

FIrewood takes 6 months to a year. Thinner pieces (3"x8") will dry faster.

If you want a refined and polished finish, you need to consider stabilization as well.

Go ahead and try it. Experience gained is worth the effort.

If you keep an eye on the exchange. In the custom makers section, watch the materials thread. You will often see some wood marked down on clearance.

I picked up a set of book matched 1.5"x4.5"x3" black dyed curly maple for $15.

There are some steals in there, you just have to be fast and if you rely on that thread. If you bookmark the stores, you can check them in the a.m. before you leave for work, then check again on lunch.
