Hello All,
There is a very good possibility that my wife, two of our kids, and I are going to be spending 4 to 5 months in Mexico on the coast but far south into the country and far away from most of the drug fueled violence that is occurring elsewhere. We've both been to Mexico before a few times each and carried BK11's with us while we were in country. That said, this trip will be for a much longer time with the last three only lasting a few days each (moslty cruise ship shore excursions) and I'm interested if anyone has any knowledge regarding the legalities of having knives on us.
Some simple Google searching produces a plethora of links with people claiming that even a small Victorinox can get you brought up on weapons charges. After digging a bit more, it looks like people are usually charged with a weapons charge for even small knives in connection with another charge. You know, adding more trumped up charges just like we do it here in America. Getting three felonies for the same action, that kind of thing. This seems to be the truth of it since so many of the residents open carry knives on their person all day long to assist with daily tasks. The US Consolate offices recommend not carrying even the smallest kind of pocket knife even though switchblades are legal in Mexico. They are probably trying to keep Americans from getting themselves into additional trouble if they get mixed up with corrupt police, etc.
I'm mostly curious if anyone has personal experience in Mexico where they've been stopped and questioned by "law enforcement" or been in any kind of trouble for carrying a knife. Also, who's carried a knife in Mexico and for what length of time?
Thanks in advance for any responses.
