Extinct Patterns

In what manufactures line?

To be honest I'm not entirely sure. My interest is coming from looking at the old knife advertisements and/or catalog pages. After looking at some of them, I wondered about the patterns not seen anymore. Are there that many?

There are a lot of patterns that don't get made much anymore. The old Case hawkbills and their sliding-joint OTF comes to mind. The fishtail pattern isn't made much- though I think Queen still makes a few. I haven't seen any recent knives with lobster picks. You really don't see many straight razors, either.

This thread has a few things you don't see every day:

elephant toe's or sunfish patterns, although Case is offering them again. Ive seen Bulldog brand and Hen&Rooster, and the bluegrass Winchesters

A few that come to mind... horseman's, sleeveboard lobster, corn, fixed-blade pen, 4-blade senator (?), fixed blade champagne, anything with a button hook. Lots of old patterns were recently revived e.g., harness jack, ring-turn, doctors, cotton sampler, leg for example.

I think almost every pattern is covered by somebody these days. Case has their "vault program", where they discontinue a pattern and put it away, then re-release it at a later date. Funny, though - once I looked at what they were "vaulting", other good quality manufacturers will have the void in those patterns filled in no time. I guess it's more a question of which manufacturer, as d.parker said.

I'm not sure about patterns, but I whittle quite a bit, and my favorite blade type is the wharncliff in carbon steel, which I don't see very much of these days.

thx - cpr

The equal end jack is no longer made.

Somebody posted a picture of one and I recognized the pattern as being the same as that of my first pocket knife I adopted from my dads tool kit when I was ~8. Neeman and 6.0stroker were kind enough to ID it for me.

I've seen pictures of equal end jacks before but never have I handled one. It's a very nice pattern and one I would certainly carry.

The pattern itself isn't extinct, but the size is and style is. I'm referring to Small Balloon Whittlers with a Spear Blade, manicure blade and Pen blade--usually seen in pearl and 2 7/8" closed.

Here is a pattern similar to the balloon whittlers that is no longer around

The Loom Fixer pattern is long gone. Most shuttle fly loom fixers carried one (or a similar half hawk bill pattern) when I started in the textile business.

S-K what's a Fixed Blade Champagne please? Something for lopping off the corks on shampoo:D Mini sabre....

does anyone have pictures or other images of the patterns mentioned thus far?
