I am just wondering what all of you use when you make a hidden tang--but not mortised or with a buttcap--where the hole needs to be deeper than the average drill bit, but not all the way through the solid handle material.

I am thinking there must be some good extra long drill bits out there, but I would very much appreciate recommendations based on all of your experience.

Thank you in advance.

John,
I have had to use them and I got aircraft drills from MSC, they were 12" long if I remember correctly.

I make game calls that require holes up to 5" deep, i use COLT brad point drill bits that you can get from Rockler.

How to make An Extra Long Drill Bit...

To make an extra long bit to drill through wood or sheet rock etc (soft materials). Heat and pound the end of a iron rod flat, grind or file the end to a point and the sides to desired width. straighten and drill ;)

I go one step further and use an extra long end mill. I got a 4" long 1/4 inch end mill from MSC years ago. I use it to make the pocket for the tang. With a thru/stick tang I drill from the other end to finish up the handle. I use my mill to accomplish this, but if you are careful it can be done on a drill press.
