I've always liked the Ek Model 50 and I was ok with the handle being short (I wear M sized gloves) but the thinness of the scales made me feel like I was holding onto a pencil so it just sat in my collection unused.
By luck I was searching on ebay and found a seller "Carroll's Custom Knife Scales", and while he did make replacement scales I asked if he could make a thicker set BUT it needed to use the same handle hardware AND fit the current sheath. In about 3 days, he pulled it off!!
So removing the old scales was a little effort - no locktite but needed a fair bit of torque:
I selected black canvas micarta. They look grey out of the box so a little spritz of WD40 and they look awesome.
The fit to the scale is very good, just a very slightly undersized on the end of the butt tang.
The sheath lips expand out a little but the knife slides in perfectly fine.
The change is TRANSFORMATIVE from 0.7" to 0.8" makes a huge difference.. It's gone from a knife I was planning to sell to a nicely handling knife with a great texture. These scales are amazing and great craftmanship from Lewis Carroll.
Since I had to ship these all the way to Singapore, I also ordered a set of scales for the Spartan Harsey Kabar to replace the functional plastic factory scales.
These are the exact same profile as the factory scales just in black canvas micarta. These ones have an aggressive ridged texture. It's very secure but I'll probably sand down the surface a little for my city hands
The scale fit is not quite as good but perfectly acceptable - again, makes a big difference in handling. They look and feel great.
He makes a variety of handle scales and he's starting to branch out to folders. Very communicative seller and an up front guy - so I highly recommend Carroll's Custom Knife Scales. (No affiliation, just a very satisfied customer.)
