That piece of meteorite must have cost a pretty penny and been hell to grind. Amazing work.

Thanks guys.

Stu - Yes, I'll bet the meteorite was expensive - it belongs to the customer. Grinding meteorite is "lots" of fun. You can't wet it with water to keep it cool (rust can be a serious problem), so I grind bare-handed and when it gets too hot to hold (in about 5 seconds), I place it between two large blocks of steel to cool. It helps if you have several pieces going at the same time and you can shift between them.

how brittle is meteorite to work with? I'm guessing the properties of this would be more akin to hematite rather then a block of iron?

Thanks guys.

What grind did you use on the edge?

This is flat ground.

Hi Robert - This meteorite isn't really "brittle" at all at room temps. It is mostly iron and "feels" like iron when I grind, drill or carve it. One thing different is that it seems to heat up much faster - I think because of the Nickel making it so Tough. It grinds and files s...l...o...w..ly .... ...........

Wow thats rather interesting...I figured it would be more rock like in properties (just with a high iron content) and have that extreme brittleness to it. The finished product is outstanding though and I bet the owner is extremely impressed.
