Hi there! This ER BF2 is with me since some years now. I think it’s a decent folding knife for everyday use, good looking, simple, essential, functional and fairly robust for EDC tasks. Of course the competition in this segment is fierce and there are many good items out there! I must confess when I picked this up in 2009, I was won over mainly by its design. Along the years, anyway, I came to appreciate its performances. As said, decent, not outstanding :). I consider the BF2 as a basic utility folder, a kind of “jack of all trades, master of none”. Here it’s strength and weakness. I put this knife at work in many EDC tasks, ranging from the box cutter in offices & warehouses to food prep and simple outdoor, hiking use, as making feather-sticks, limbing branches from bushes, pointing poles, etc. Performances are overall acceptable, though not outstanding in cutting capabilities and rather poor in carving. Blade has a flat grind but the angle is a bit thick which surely adds on resistance but sacrifices some cutting ability. Being this folder the only one I own with a tanto profile blade, I have to say it’s very utilitarian for several tasks.

The blade is made with N690 steel, hardness declared around 58 hrc. Surface treatment is zirconium carbonitride coating, named testudo (turtle in Latin, also referring to a Roman Legion formation :)), which I can state to be very resistant to scratches and corrosion. Handle is made out of anodized aluminum alloy from 6000 series (named anticorodal). Nowadays a coarse version of the handle is available with improved grip. Locking system on BF2 is a liner lock with a patented assisted manually activated security mechanism protected by a "carter", which impact the design. Fit and finish is really good and this folder kept up in good shape and full functionality. Only once I have disassembled it all for a major cleaning. Re-grind it hasn’t been difficult for me, mainly because I have never allowed the blade to become totally dull. I use a Fallkniven DC4 and a ceramic stick after weekly use. It comes with a reversible clip which I really like, being really low-ride. Very discreet carry :).

About Extrema Ratio a lot has been said and a lot negative. Critics mainly revolve around their overpriced products, the same average steel quality for all their models since years, tacti-cool, impractical or even over-the-top design, products designed only for collectors, just marketing, etc. From a user point of view, I can surely agree with some topics addressed to specific knives. On the other hand, especially in Italy, I don’t really understand the “hate” around this brand which exudes from many forums. In the end, it’s an Italian medium sized company which is known abroad - like few others, design and produce in Italy, is recognized for a distinctive style, invest in R&D, make quality products and keeps jobs in our country.
