Anyone have experience with Extrema Ratio knives -- in particular the BF1 and MFO models?

Hello friend,

I participate in another knife forum from Spain and I heard from them that ER knives are very overpriced products no different in make/quality than other cheaper products like american made knives.

Cheers.

Extrema Ratio actually makes very good knives using very high quality steels. Their fit and finish is exceptional. They are mostly scoffed-at because of their aggressive, impractical and over-the-top designs.

I have a BF1. Not overpriced. Not an aggressive, impractical, or over-the-top design. It is a small, tough, sharp folder. Very handy EDC.

Also have Nemesis and MPC (MultiPurpose Combat). I like them. Don't often need knives that large anymore.

I like to hear from people with some personal experience. Referring to other people's opinions, from an unnamed forum with no way for us to assess what they really know -- waste of time.

Extrema Ration had a forum here, now archived. With only a small American presence, it is hard to get much of a discussion going. They were also hurt by their American dealer who ran the defunct forum dropping them to start his own line of knives. Dark Ops. Confusion over DO and ER looking similar also hurt ER's reputation, unfairly.

Nope. I have the MF3, it's overpriced. I'd much rather have the Zero Tolerance 0300 models, or the Strider models, for that kind of money. They do have a neat design, but as far as durability...they ARE over priced. I think it's because they are imported. There may be a tax involved in the price or extra shipping figured in or something. Much like Ferrari's and BMW's here. They are significantly cheaper in Europe. But even taking price out of the formula...for SHTF or EDC I'd still rather have ZT or Strider, and yes I own those also.

Are you looking at MSRP for price? If ER had a bigger presence in the US, they might be priced more accessibly. I buy a lot of my knives and gear on the Exchange here. Big difference in price. I got the MPC for about a third off, if I'm remembering it right.

i have a BF1cd(GEO) and a BF2cd(BLK), both have been excellent performers. the only complaint i can come up with for them is a lack of texture on the scales.

they are pretty close in size to the BM Griptilian and Mini Grip. the BF2 is my fav tactical folder and it has kicked the Striders and Emersons out of my collection. the BF1 was purchased when i was kicking around the idea of getting a small Sebenza... but for 1/2 price i couldnt be happier (nothing wrong with the Seb though). the BF1 has the same thickness liners and blade thickness of the larger BF2, its one stout little sidekick.

as much as i like these, i do have to say that im not overly impressed with their larger knives, the MF0 and MF1 are about the only others i like.

here's some pics-

Not overpriced but very expensive like others quality knifes.
Fit and finish are not why I choose my RAO, but because this knife is really unique.
Style and class are why I choose my BF3, a real beauty !

I had a BF2 and I had to trade it; those handles are way to slick for my taste. I kept imagining wet hands trying to make a cut and then, boom, nasty cut. Well made and good workmanship, just no grip.

I also have a BF1. It's a nice little folder for the money and one of the few affordable Extrema Ratio knives. Their pricing has always seemed overboard to me but they make some cool looking fixed blades and unique folders.

I want an RAO.
I don't know why, but I have to have one someday, and as soon as a get that better job or big tax refund (or both!:)), I'm getting one.

A couple of years ago, it was said here that ER would manufacture the next-generation bayonets for the French army.
Don't know if it can help...

My BF1 arrived and it's nifty!

I like the size, shape and weight of this small folder, plus the deep-pocket clip.
The pivot screw can be adjusted with just about any flat screwdriver -- no special tool needed. Construction, f&f seem first rate.

The BF1 is the smallest of this particular line and seems the most reasonably priced. In my research, I saw one unconfirmed report that the BF1 was being discontinued. A pity, if true.

I like the looks of the larger BF2 but I'm not too keen on secondary locks, which, thankfully, the BF1 lacks.

I paid $130 at KW.

I have a BF1 TT and a Fulcrum C Fixed, and think they are underrated... they are def worth the $$ IMO... the Fulcrum C is a work of art! The angles on that thing! I think you'll be happy.

Greetings all, I am a recently joined member, so if I unintentionally cross any lines, feel free to inform me.
The photos in this post were all taken by me.

My personal experience with the Extrema Ratio MFO a.k.a. 133MFO.
I bought an Extrema Ratio MFO.
Upon opening the box, I was very impressed with the color, finish, shape, ergonomic feel, weight and incredibly high degree of blade sharpness of the knife.
In fact I love this knife.
However..... with much regret and very sadly, I have to sell it, as in my opinion it has a potentially dangerous design flaw which I will explain.

When I bought it, I was aware that it was a "liner lock" and additionally had a "secondary safety lock" (red switch) which was a major factor in me buying the knife.
Unfortunately nowhere on the Extrema Web site does it reveal that the "secondary safety lock" only works/functions in the open blade position and not in the closed blade position.
This is for me, this where the design flaw is, in that besides thumb studs on the blade.... there is a rather large thumb "flipper" that protrudes from the upper spine of the handle....
if the MFO is put into a back pack, a waist pouch a.k.a. fanny pack or even clipped inside a pants pocket.... (I have done all 3)
and the "thumb flipper" is even slightly bumped or pushed against anything in the pack, the pouch or even in your pocket.... the blade opens too easily!
Even just a millimeter is too much and in my opinion this is a dangerous accident waiting to happen.

This knife (MFO) has absolutely and unbelievably no detente in the closed position, if you take your thumb and index fingers and gently pull the blade out from the closed position even just a millimeter,
it will stay out and not pull back in.
ANYTHING that comes up against, bumps up against or presses the over-sized "thumb flipper" causes the blade to come right out from the handle.
I cannot put this knife into my back pack, waist pouch or even my pocket... and then reach in at any given point in time and get a disastrous bloody surprise to my hand or fingers.
If this knife were designed to have the "secondary safety lock" work/function in the closed position... there would be no design flaw in my opinion.
I wrote to Extrema Ratio and explained this to them and told them that if they ever re-design the MFO I'd buy it again.

I really "love the knife", I hate like H*** to have to sell it, but as it is currently designed and how "scalpel sharp" the blade is, I am unwilling to carry it unless forced to carry it in a sheath "for my own protection"!?

I own an Extrema Ratio Fulcrum C. which is superb and I'm happy as a clam with, but sadly and regrettably... I have to say goodbye to this MFO.
Hate to give a negative review on my first posting, but this is my experience with this knife.
I have to be able to confidently and safely throw a folder into my back pack, waist pouch or even down into my pocket and not worry that my finger/s will be sliced off when I reach in to get it either in the light or worse... in the dark.

Lastly, I have small hands, this knife fits my hand perfectly and it's my opinion that this short handled MFO is best suited for a person/operator with small to medium small hands, with a large hand your pinky will be off the end.
I live in N.Y.C. where the knife laws are the most archaic and primitive in the U.S., I have to be able to carry a folder inside a pack, pouch, pocket and not reach in and get a bloody surprise.
