Hi. What are your thoughts on the Extrema Ratio Shrapnel? I ordered a MOD Ayoob a few days ago, and then I saw pictures of the Shrapnel. I may have to make a second purchase in less than a week!

Extrema Ratio knives are supposed to be really tough, but for that money, I'd get something from Chris Reeve. Maybe an Aviator, a Shadow or a Mountaineer. It depends on what you're looking for.

Why would you get something from Chris Reeves instead?

I have not had first hand experience with Extrema Ratio knives but i have heard many good things about them. Some people think they are overpriced, however some people think sebenzas are over-priced. It all depends on what YOU want to get out of a knife.

I just like his style better. I never said that it is better and I did say that it depends on what you're looking for.

I like the idea of a super strong boot knife. But I won’t buy it if it carries or cuts poorly.

Hey mate..I own the extrema ration shrapnel in geo camo. It is a really solid little knife with a sharp blade. However, it is in no way a concealable backup weapon. The handle is as big as all other ER knives and it is very fat. From what I have read, the Razorback is far better designed for this purpose. I would recommend the ER for a small strong fixed blade, but there are much better knives for edc or backup. I reallly love the shrapnel but I am planning on getting a razorback myself. Hope that helps.

Thanks Irezumi,
You saved me from making a disappointing purchase. I was under the impression that the Shrapnel was a miniature version of the bigger ER knives.
Thanks again,
A Zone

no worries mate. It kinda is a miniature version of the bigger ER knives..just not really a concealable backup. I was looking at it again last night though and I must really admit that I like it a lot. The handle kinda reminds me of a pistol when it is docked in its sheath. The thickness of the handle is full width but a little shorter than the bigger ER knives. If you want a full review, have a look at this link (you need to sign up at the forums first though)..good pics and an honest review here of the shrapnel plus a heap of other ER knives..

Here are a few pics from that review...

Thanks for the pictures. It looks as if the knife is a bit to large for discreet carry. I really like the design of the shrapnel, to bad it’s not a little smaller.

I agree with most of the things Irezumi said. The Shrapnel is a very solid knife and I like a lot, too.

Since the handle of the Shrapnel is very short it has to be thick to allow a secure grip. IWB carry of the Shrapnel is possible but not overly comfortable. For me the most comfortable way to carry the Shrapnel concealed is in the side pocket of a cargo pant.

If concealed carry it a must, a Spyderco Perrin or a Nenchmade Nimravus probably are the better choices although they are a bit longer.

The N690 of my Shrapnel has to be sharpened more frequently than the VG10 of my Spyderco Perrin. The Nimravus in M2 plays in another league.

I really like that design. Ive never owned an extrema ration . maybe its aobut time. They have a reputation for being sharpened prybars. Do they live up to that hype?

A Zone,
I have one of the Col Moshien(sp?) and it is one very wicked knife. The handle is extremly comfortable and came razor sharp and with a needle like point. It would make an excellent battle knife but the point is soooo sharp that I woud be afraid it might break with too much side pressure. The sheath has a multitude of ways to attach it to your gear.
It's a little pricey but it's a great knife too.

FWIW I would also consider Chris Reeve knives. I have 2 Green Berets, one 7" and one 5.5" blade and I have 2 Neil Roberts Warriors which I favor over the Green Beret since I am not that crazy about the serrations and the N.R has just a plain edge.

Here is a picture of the G.B 5.5" blade and the 6" bladed Neil Roberts Warrior in aftermarket leather sheaths from CRK.

I'd go with the Shrapnel over a Chris Reeve.Iv'e seen other posts stating that Chris Reeve knives can be brittle.I have never read a negative comment about Extrema ratio knives except for the price!

I love my ER Shrapnel. The total width of the handle is about the same as a gerber Gator folder or a Busse Public Defender. I carry my Shrapnel every day and discression is not a problem. I love the 1/4" thick, flat ground blade. It's an efficient cutter and stabber with plenty of strength and great design. I can't say anything bad about it (even the price seems reasonable, for what you get). It is the most well-rounded EDC i have ever carried. just my 2c.

if you ever needed service for this knife, where would you go?

extrema ratio is based in italy, correct? so how do you get this knife warranted? does ER provide sharpening services? regrinding for dulled tips/etc?

just wondering. it looks like a solid knife.

I have the all-black shrapnel. It's a very solidly built little knife, feels good in the hand, well balanced. It would not be my first choice as an EDC though cus the upper hand guard would get in the way for fine work. I read that a version of the Shrapnel is now available without the upper guard. The lower finger guard is still retained.

I recently got a Spyderco Moran drop point and it is a really nice utility knife. Light as a feather and made of VG10 steel. It would work equally well on deer or bass. The blade steel is thin (but not too thin!) and is good for slicing. It's perfectly balanced and feels just great to use. FYI, I just read that the late Steve Irwin (Croc Hunter) used a Moran.
