Hi all. Recently got a Strider BT, and I'm in LOVE! :D It's my baby! (A big one, at that!) I am maily into large tactical knives, and only ones that I could trust my life to if need be. My dilemma is this:

I LOVE the Extrema Ratio Harpoon F It looks AWESOME, its big, and has a great sheath with included drop-leg attachments! The tiger-stripes are amazing.

My question is: should I get this knife which I love so much, or should I get ANOTHER Strider, which have proven reputations that I could without a doubt stake my life on? What would you all do? Is variety truly the spice of life? I love variety as much as anyone, but at the same time, I like standing by old favorites. Isn't it redundant to have several of the same knife?

I'm probably going to get the Extrema, but just want to know what you all would do.

Thanks!

I think that when it comes to buying knives, for the most part you should buy the one you LIKE!

However, I suspect that from a purely functional perspective, the Strider will give you more for the money.

Sorry, I don't have enough time to write more!

I think you should get the harpoon and beat the life out of it, see if you can make it fail.

I already know the Strider won't fail, but we need a crash test du....er crash tester for the ER. ;)

I have an Extrema Ratio T2000S with the Tiger-Tech stripes. It is an extremely sturdy, well made knife. I have also owned some Strider knives and have two Strider D/AL's on the way. My feeling is get the Extrema Ratio knife if you want it. I love the T2000S and the tiger stripe finish is really cool. You should own at least one.

The Strider knives are definitely made better and are overall better knives in my opinion. If you are going to collect then purchase Striders for your collection and keep one out for use. A Strider MFS, MT, or BT may work well for a carry fixed blade. Buy one or two Extrema Ratio knives. They are cool production knives. Target Masters is the U.S. distibutor and supposedly Extrema Ratio has some new knives in the works for the U.S. market. I wouldn't overlook the Extrema Ratio blades if you desire one, but at the same time I would not compare them to Strider. Just because they have tiger stripes doesn't make them equal. It's like comparing a cougar to a lion. Sure, they are both big cats but there is still a big difference. If you get the Extrema Ratio blade make sure you get what they call the "ballistic gum" sheath. That's a great sheath and much like the design of Strider's SOE.

Bimmer: JUST the guy I wanted to talk to!!!
Thanks for the reply! Obviously, few blades will compare to a Strider. My question was more like; of course the Extremas will not be AS awesome as the Strider, so am I wasting my money with it? On the other hand, I like the differences in design that the Extrema has, and you can't just have one make of knife!!!

Could you please tell me more about your knife? How do you like the sheath? Is it lined with kydex (Inpax) or something? How does it work? Is it well thought-out? I like how they have the rubber grip patch on the sheath as a secondary safety to keep the blade in.

My concern is that the Ballistic Gum sheath looks bulky compared to the Inpax, and I want the Inpax just based on the pics I've seen.

Please give me a more thorough description, and post/email pics if you can!!! Tell me ALL about it!!!

Thanks!!!

First of all I just received an email from Frank who is part of the U.S. distributorship. He recently went to Italy and observed the factory quality control at Extrema Ratio. He seems impressed. He also told me that the blades are hand finished. They have at least two new lines coming out for the U.S. soon. Frank tells me that they are heavier duty than the current models. The new models are the Fulcrum and Golem. They should be on the Target Masters website within the next week or so. www.target-masters.net

I do not have a way to take pictures or I would send you some. My sheath is much like the Strider that fits my MT. It has a strap that snaps around the handle to keep it secure but the handle material is like part of a velcro fastener. They don't call it velcro but it is similar. This part of the handle material bonds with a section of the sheath that also keeps it very secure.
There is no kydex or abrasive material in the sheath so there is no apparent scratching of the blade. That is a draw back with Strider knives and their sheaths.

Cool! Frank just sent me a picture of the two new models for Extrema Ratio. Email me at bimmer1@wfeca.net and I will send them to you. I don't know how to post them out here but maybe someone can if I email the picture to them.:p

The new golem and fulrum models are really cool, they are geometric style tantos, with Extrema's New handle style, they are going to continue to make the old style handle, but they are going to make them interchangeable, so you can pic the one you want!

I believe that i have a Golem on the way!

drjones-i would get the extrema because you seem to realy want one, and i would like to hear how you think it compares to the strider, since they are both in a similar class of stainless steeled tactical fixed blades (a rather small group of knives when you stop to think about it) the extrema's are less money, so i would like to know how you think they compare.

I saw the extrema ratio knives at the Blade show and IMO the Striders are the superior knives.
