Extremely soft pull on my Pony Jack?

The pen blade on the Pony Is extremely soft, with a very weak snap and a lot of vertical wiggle. I was wondering if this is typical? I noticed that the spring is smaller than the one spring on the spear, I thought that this may be the cause. Any similar experiences? Every GEC I've got has had a gator snap except for this one.

Well... wiggle is not typical on a new knife. Imo that is usually the cause during production.

About the smaller spring of penblade - what do you mean? Is it not as broad as the mainblade? (the reason there would be that the penblade isnt that broad like the mainblade) Is the spring shorter?

Do you have a pic of the knife, especially the spring would be pretty interessting.

On my Pony Jack, the pen blade does have a much lighter pull than the main blade. I actually like this because I use the pen blade for light tasks where there is far less danger of it snapping shut on me. There is no blade play, though. I only ever had one GEC knife that had the slightest hint of play. I sent it to them and got it back in less than two weeks, and it was perfect.

that sounds like a genuine QC issue, there shouldn't be wiggle in the open position. I don't know what the cause is, but it shouldn't be like that even with a relatively thin spring. I like pen blades on a jack knife because they typically have an even stronger snap than the longer blade, possibly because of the reduced leverage of the shorter blade. This makes them good for scraping, or tasks where a little more force is required, a wiggly blade is not good for this.

Sounds like that one needs to go back for warranty repair/replacement.

That's what I would do. Or I'd return it to my dealer for a refund or replacement if it hasn't been used.

I'll probably send it to GEC, but first I'll try and flush the springs. I had a similar problem with a case knife- turns out there was lint in between the tang and spring.

I checked mine - nice decent opening and snaps into place, but since it's a round joint and the spring is a bit soft compared to the main, there's not much resistance to it beginning to close, so yeah, if you wiggle it up and down it will wiggle because there's not much pressure from the spring. It seems normal to me.

Must be a dud, spring size should not make any difference.

My Boy's Knife with single Clip has actually a tough pull even for me and a ROARING snap:D:thumbup:

Hope you get it replaced, weak snap will never improve.
