I really like the versatility and flexibility offered by carrying both a chopping knife with about a 8-18" blade and a shorter utility knife with a 3-6" blade. So here are links to a few pics of big & little knife combo's for your perusal. All sheaths by Okuden (Oku here on BFC).

First up are some Swamp Rats. Battle Rat on top, Paul's Ratchet at lower left, and Howling Rat at lower right.

Next is just the BR and HR from the grouping above.

Lastly, here's a Nick Wheeler square-nosed chopper in W2 steel shown with the tan Swamp Rat INFI Bandicoot.

ooohhhh. Man! I like those bad boys.......

I don't really have any official "big" blades at the moment, but I do like the look of those Marsh Rodents :D

here's my chopper/little knife combo...or at least one of them:

this is my lightweight woodsbumming combo. The chpper's a Gransfors Bruks Mini and the SAK's an alox Farmer. I often add a Mora #1, Allan Blade Pack Pal, Mora 2k, or Brusletto Balder...

The rifle's a henry youth model, which is nice and short (33" OAL, 16" barrel). It's great in the tight brush and is a tack driver too...

#3, thanks for posting the pic of that sweet setup. The GB Mini's I've seen have nice sharp edges that are thin enough to make them decent cutters, besides having the heft to make them choppers too. Nice!!

Below is another pic of some big & little buddies. From the top it is a Becker BK-9 Combat Bowie, an OD Blackjack MK-1 Marauder, Cold Steel ER-1 Emergency Rescue manual out-the-front knife, and a Busse Jungle Skeleton Key with its camo pants from Okuden (http://www.okuden.net) on a ballchain.

While I don't consider the CS ER1 to be very optimally designed as an outdoor survival knife, the ease with which it slips into a pocket or pack means it has a decent chance of actually being with you when TSHTF. As an urban emergency knife for cutting seatbelts or clothing, it should work great. Also, given its out-the-front design, it would be interesting to do some empirical tests of its handle-blade joint lateral strength compared to a comparably priced folder (about $22-$25 USD).

And below is some stuff I pulled out of a "grab 'n go" bag for fun. The mid-size black knife is the Swamp Rat Camp Tramp. FWIW, the stuff in the mini ziploc bag beneath the red Bic lighter is a 1 oz block of beeswax to use as a tinder flame sustainer or to wax thread for sewing leather.

Rok Jok,

What kind of saw is that and where can I get one? Also do you find that the sharpener pictured works on Swamp Rats? I have one and it doesn't sharpen any of my knives very well. Thanks.

Vampire, The saw is the folding Pocket Saw from Tashiro Hardware which I keep recommending highly. It's about $30 for the handle + blade and about $11 per replacement blade.

It was reviewed along with a couple others in tests I posted here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=249653 Cliff Stamp had some comments on it, including its weather-resistance, here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=195322

The X-stick sharpener has too small an angle for Swamp Rats, but works fine on the SAK that also rides in the pack. To sharpen the Rats, I carry crock sticks or diamond sharpeners. If I were smarter, I could pack sandpaper for sharpening their convex edge. It would not only be lighter & more compact, it could also be torn into pieces for distribution among my pockets & packs.

RokJok,

I always carry an EZ lap with me and that works pretty well, but sometimes I'll cock my hand too far one way and it dulls the blade and I get to start over.

The problem I have with the mousepad sharpener is that your screwed if you wear out the sand paper and it's all you have. That's why I'm doing my best to get good with the EZ Lap, I know plenty of people that can get shaving sharp edges with them but I'm not there yet.

Thanks guys....:D....DannyInJapan did the design for the skinner - I made it out of 440C. The Bowie is from Himalayan-Imports.

If interested, shoot me an email.
