When sharpening an eye hoe, which side of the blade is the angle on? The reason I ask is, I just picked up an eye hoe on eBay (true temper igh7) and the bevel is on the side closest to the ground if you were digging and it seems like it should be on the other side.
Hope this isn't too off topic

to be completly frank, you are not cutting wood or roots with that, only dirt so, i wouldnt worry too much about the bevel, even if as you say, its on the wrong side, this was probably done for ease of sharpening, i bet.

After looking again the angle the tool hits the ground it makes sense to me now, not that it makes much difference, just was curious and my google foo was week

It should be on the interior side. That is to say, the side facing the user when held.

Typically that's the way it goes. Expecting ordinary people to understand how to sharpen offset blades has never been resolved. Ice augers over the past 40 years up this way come with 'sharpen-able' (and Swede-smart replaceable) blades but most users choose to hone both sides. And then they wonder why the darn thing doesn't cut (shave ice) anymore. Angles are critical! So these same people then fork over $50 for another set of blades. The reality of the situation is; a set of auger blades can easily last a lifetime providing the owner knows 'which side of the bread to butter'.

I sharpened a dozen grub hoes yesterday for my local trails association. Bevel up.

Hmm, looks like I should have gone with my first gut instinct, oh well I'll just be turning my compost pile or some light task anyway. Thanks everyone for the responses!

That is terrific Square_peg. I've never worked with a trail crew but that really seems like something worth making time for.

The gear with blue tape just waiting for paint?

Thanks for sharing the photos and for volunteering your time.

Was it an organized tool maintenance session or did you just pop in and help out?

It is worth making time for.

This was an organized work party. The blue tape is for tomorrow's paint party. Makes the tools easier to spot at the end of the day.
