Dear Members,

The word has gotten out that I suffered an injury to my eye last week and had to undergo emergency surgery to repair a partially detached retina.

I've been training very hard over the last few months in our new facility and sparring 5 days a week. I've taken a number of hard shots and even with head gear, my eye was damaged as a result.

Six hours in an emergency room on a Friday night are never fun, and I was very depressed believing that my fighting career may have been at an end. But, Monday at a new specialist I got bad news and good. The bad news was that yes I had a partial tear and retinal separation. And a ton of huge black floaters. The Dr. asked me how I had been injured and I said a series of concussive blows to the eye. "How did that happen?" I said, "I do a little boxing and I guess I zigged when I should of zagged". Here's where it gets good. The Doc looks at me and says, "This may be your lucky day. I'm the team ophthalmologist for the All-American Heavy Weight Boxing Association and I treat these injuries quite often. You need emergency laser surgery to seal off that partial tear." I said, "when will that happen?" "Right now in the next room." And in I went.

What about fighting? He said give it about 5 days rest and you can go back to full contact. That was the real good news. "Are you kidding?" "No, I'm not"

I'm not going blind and I can still do what I love. That's not bad in the overall scheme of things.

It's 3:30. I'll be in the gym if you need me.

My Best Regards,

Ernest R. Emerson

Wow, sounds like you lucked out. Good to hear about a speedy recovery. A guy I worked with had the same thing happen and if I remember right he was out of work for a few weeks and still had some recovery time after that.

Talk about being in the right place @ the right time- if there ever is a "right" time to be in the hospital w/ a detached retina...
Good News!

Man EE your probably sparring with those strong young guys. I've found a kick to the middle will end all that pretty quick. :D I hope your eye heals quickly and be careful out there.

Good luck to you, Mr. Emerson, glad to hear you are doing ok.

It's amazing how crap can hit you hard whenever you aren't expecting it. I, for example, was diagnosed with diabetes last Memorial Day.
It was a total surprise to me and it wasn't a nice and easy situation. Essentially my brain switched off and I woke up 3 days later in an hospital ICU.
What happened was that my blood sugar level rose to 918 (normal levels out to be 70-110. On average, over 800 you immediately
get in a coma, but I was conscious at all times. It's just that the conscious part of my brain, for whatever reason, didn't register anything
for 3 days...), my blood ph levels were 6.8 (the normal level for a human being is 7.4. Under 7 you risk dieing, under 6.8 it's basically
guaranteed that a person will die, as human body cells die under 6.8) and I had lost, due to dehydration, 40 pounds in
ONE WEEK (that's the period I had been feeling quite ill with flu like symptoms, before everything went downhill really fast).
If I am alive today and able to write on the forums of my favorite hobby (knife collecting), it's only because my wife acted quickly
and the EMTs + the hospital doctors and nurses were very quick. It's the closest I got to death and it still feel weirds now that I am
doing ok.

So, if can put my $0.02 in, Mr. Emerson, do take care of your health and be careful about the risks you are taking. You never know what
could happen...

First off I have to say I'm glad your going to be ok Mr Emerson. Sounds like lady luck was with you that night. I've only ever had minor eye injuries and can't imagine how that had to have felt like.

And in response to Leigon681---I agree totally. I work in a ICU treating our nations vetrans and have seen the exact thing you have described. It's scary as hell and dosen't always end well. Always take care of #1.

OK so my first post is in the books, and I definatly look forward to spending somemore time around here soaking up some good info. Now back to the knife exchange to find one of EE's fine products.

Dave,

it's people like you that saved my life and I just admire what you guys do. Keep up the good job!

I wouldn't risk another serious injury. Maybe cut down on the full impact when sparring or keep your hands up...

You are one lucky bastid! Stay Safe!
