There's a massive solar storm that should cause some pretty crazy red and green northern lights tonight. Just figured you'd ought to know... Got a bunch of school prep errands to do today but hopefully I can stuff the Maverick and hit the fire road out of town for a last minute overnight stargazing session.

They said storms like these are big enough that you can see them as far south as Colorado, so I'm pretty stoked. Early morning, 1-3AM apparently...

Thanks for the reminder! I'll have to keep an eye out after I get home from work. Thankfully I live "out in the country".

These solar storms are supposed to intensify as we approach 2012

I wish they were visible here in San Diego. I haven't seen one since I was a kid.

Yep, they're supposed to intensify through 2012 and, conceivably, wreak havoc on our grid system.

There was a lot made of this awhile back, with a couple of threads here in BF. I did a fair amount of research on the subject and wrote a piece on it. I'm just hoping the Science people are wrong about the effects; otherwise, things could get a little gnarly next year.

I'll have to try and remember to take a look. Iit's been a few years since we've had any good Northern lights this far south. (roughly the 39th parallel)
that does help explain my radio reception the past few days, though.
I was suspecting solar flares.

i am too far south.. dang!! if i lived in the NW mtns up high i would be able to see them

Thanks for the heads up, I did here on the news this morning but slipped my mind. now I got it wrote down ...someplace here...........

Been one of those days... ran all over town like a chicken with my head cut off and I'm beat but I'm saying screw old man arthiritis and stuffing an ultralight overnight bag to watch the show. A machete, a can of stew, can of peaches, can of beer, sleeping bag and fire kit. As much as I hate to miss WSS chat two nights in a row, these deals don't come about often so...

The sun is on a cycle of approximately eleven years. We just went through a period of quiet sun where a few alarmists were trying to sell the idea that the sun was shutting down. Now we're into the active part of the cycle and we'll get stories about how we will get blasted by immense flares. :)

We live in an inherently violent universe. It takes that violence to create the complex chemicals of which we are made and to power the biosphere we survive in.
