Eyeglass wearers...

I turned my head suddenly in reaction to a noise and my eyeglasses almost flew off my head. If I had to evacuate my building I'd have to walk down 36 floors worth of steps with a whole bunch of other people. If my glasses fell off, they would be stepped on and I'd be in a bad way. I do carry a spare pair in my pack, but...

I found a little attachment string thing (similar function to croakies) and put it in my odds-and-ends coin wallet so it will always be with me. I can slip it on quickly if the situation calls for. Plus a little cordage doesn't hurt.

Of course, this doesn't apply to everyone. Any other suggestions?

I carry a spare pair of glasses, but also an elastic eyeglass strap for just the scenario you describe.

I wrote a related article on self-defense and vision impairment here:

I carry a pair of Rec-Specs in my pack. I don't wear them often but they are my back-up plan if I really need to get physical. Mac

I wear the old fashioned "hippie" style round wire rims and they have spring earpeices that curl around my ears. I can even swim in them, and as long as I don't do any diving they stay on my head.

They have been a godsend for me because I have a flat face and before that I was forever pushing my glasses up off my nose!

Mine are similar to these with the spring ear things but mine have frames that go all around the lens:

Hmmm... I'll have to check something liek that out then next time I buy glasses. I just picked up a new pair yesterday. They are frameless lenses with titanium temples. They are incredibly light. Even though they are adjusted as best as possible to my melon, I feel like a gust of wind could blow them off.

I keep an eye glass strap of some kind when I'm in a boat or fishing. I'm more concerned about loosing them then having them fall off and get broken although on a boat the wind could blow off your glasses. Once they are off and you are over water, they are probably history. I keep a spare pair in my vehicle all the time. That is pretty much my insurance policy in terms of always knowing where a backup is loacated. Same goes with a flash light; always have one in the vehicle and I periodically check the batteries.

Thanks for the comments all. Phil, I downloaded your article and will read it on the train ride home. Thanks much!

Y'all have a good weekend.
