You can buy either a set of pliers or a punch style eyelet setter from knife or leather suppliers. They're tough on the hands if you're making several sheaths but I prefer the pliers.

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!

Fastener supply sells the industrial dies for eyelets. They are about 60-80 bucks.
Then I bought a 39 dollar 1 ton press. I modified it to except the dies and I have a nice eyelet press for the kydex.

Hey Guys...

Ok heres what you do...

Hop in the car, and cruise over to Ace and buy a $5.00 brass plumb bob, made by General or Great Neck, or whoever. Doesn't have to be anything Wow,,any plumb bob will do..

Now, Hop back in the car and drive Home...

Knock the tip of the plumb bob off on your grinder, being careful NOT to make any marks on the slopes of the bob...You want the bob short enough that when the eyelet is finished it doesn't stick out the bottom...

Put this on your eyelet and tap it using the weight of Only the hammer 3-4 times.

I use a piece of hardwood 2X4 in a vise,, or you can use a steel block with a hunk of leather over it.

Tap the eyelet with a small smooth ball peen (flat side) in a slight circular motion until it starts to roll..
When it rolls,,tap it straight down...

There ya go,, just saved you $85.00 ..

Practice on some scraps until you get it right...

Have fun..

Brad,
Darrel and L6 have great ideas! Or you can spend $ 2.50 and get the eyelet setter kit(Tandy Leathercraft Supply) www.tandyleather.com or your local hobby supply store (better and cheaper/no shipping) and set them on the cheap! If you're going to be setting alot of eyelets the dies and pliers are the smart way to go.

Theres always a cheap way out.
I just dont care and dont have time to screw around. The dies set the eyelets perfect evertime and I dont screw up anything.
The dies are heat treated to 58 rc and will last years.

I like the clean rolled edges and no marks on the sheaths ..
With my sons company elite tactical carry systems making pro sheaths for companies we dont have time to use a hammer.
The press is fast !

The machne that fastener suply recommends is 300-500 bucks. So I did save lts of dollars on that with the 39.00 arobor press.

Darrel,
I didn't mean that your method was wrong but, for a guy that's just trying this out he might not have budgeted that into his project. I agree when you're setting alot of eyelets or making knives for a living time is money.
