Hello! I'll be spending much more time outside this year, riding my bike in the coulees, hiking in the coulees, hiking in the mountains, and so on. What eyewear can you recommend for such activities? I was looking at WileyX. Are Oakleys really that good? I'm an eyewear virgin, so take it slow. ;)

Absolutely Rock! Lightweight, comfortable, bombproof - the greatest!

Both come with different lenses for different light conditions.

Thanks Java! I was hoping you would respond.

I guess some more info might help. I don't wear glasses at all, so i don't need prescription. I am worried about wind and dust and sun. My little neck of the praries is the sunshien capital of Canada and does it ever blow here some days! Winds in excess of 60 miles per hour come every year. So, wind, dust and sun I need protection from. Oh, and reasonable prices too. I am still a poor starving student.

hey Java, do you know is Go Get 'Em Gear sells specs?

I always liked Oakleys, but for really good anti-glare shades I like Maui Jims. Really nice polarized lenses.

I'm a big Oakley fan and have several. I haven't had any of the frmae breakage problems others have had with them. I do take very good care of them though. The M-Frames (even mroe so the Pro M-Frame) are very nice forthe variety of lens shades. I have the dark iridium, the VR28 bronze, and the yellow lens. I use the dark iridium and the VR28 the most for mountain biking. I use a pair of Topcoats for snowboarding, unless it's cloudy the I use goggles. I've crashed in both sports, but not hard enough to smash the Oakleys. I have to admit that alot of Oakley's pricing comes from marketing.

Other name brand makers are very good too. Several of my friends have Smith Sliders, which are very nice. Bolle and Cebe are also good makers. I suggest you try a bunch on and buy the one that's most comfortable and that you think looks good.

Thanks everyone for the info you have given me so far.

Gadgetman, i think you are very right. I'll go get something at the store that fits me insted of looking at which brand or what not to get specifically.

Having said that, what should I be looking for? What brands are crap? Which are o.k.? Should I get ones with the wide lens like WileyX or the Oakley M frames, or something like what Javahead posted above? Are interchangeable lenses a great feature?

Thanks!

Crayola,

I've worn mine mountain biking, on my motorcycle, running, shooting, fastroping and jumping. Either pair rocks in keeping your eyes happy. The lighter lenses in the Brikos just make everything you see come to life in crisp clear vibrant colors, a big plus when shooting or biking in low light.

I cannot recommend them enough - of the two I'd go with the Brikos, but both are super comfortable, sturdy and secure. The fact that they come with and allow you to switch out different lenses make them super adaptable.

I was a hardcore Oakley guy (Tevas and Oakleys, y'know, the SF stereotype) until got my hands on these!

God I wish I sold them :D

Have fun!

I am one of those guys who wears sunglasses every day. Cloudy, snowy, what have ya, there they are.

I bought a pair of Oakley Frogskins at the store one time after trying on EVERYTHING. I settled on the Frogs cuz they stayed on my head. Man do they stay there. These things won't come off... they grip to the side of your head like a magnet. I've crashed on the mountain bike several times, and even landed in the water once. Yep, came up with the shades still riding my nose.

I scratched the heck out of them one time, and sent them back to Oakley. For $30 they crammed new lenses in em and sent em back to me good as new. Little bro has a pair too, the Eye-Jackets I think. He snapped the arm off on them and was gonna throw them away. I called Oakley (having still had the # written down) and they had a new arm at the house 4 days later, no charge. Very good customer service.

I finally lost my first pair and got another. The best thing about them? The price. You never see Oakleys on sale anywhere, but at www.reioutlet.com they were blowing some out so I jumped on em. Wish I woulda bought 5 pairs then. Check out that site, just type Oakley into the search box, they might have some more over there.

Best o' luck with whatever you get!

Those deals at REI-outlet are sweet! I want a flak jacket! I amy be increasing my Oakley collection.

Some decent reveiws for eyeglasses are at www.mtbr.com (mountain biking review). That should tell you which brands people like or dislike. In my bias opinion, reviewer rank on products for trivial reasons or because they abused them. Keep that in mind.
