Hello All,

Please post your opinion / your experience about the Fällkniven A2 in this topic.

And how well does this knife perform 'against' for example a CS-Trailmaster SMIII, or a Busse knife?

I just ordered an A2, it will arrive on Friday . Pictures of A2's owned by forum-members would be more then welcome in this topic aswell :)!

Thanks in advance for your replies!
Regards,
Betermans.

It's too late , you've already ordered it !! I'll bet you never send it back .I have the S-1 and some kitchen knives and I'm very impressed with VG-10. It holds an edge well yet is easy to sharpen.Makes a good slicer and good chopper too. ..BTW the A-2 is about 75 % heavier than the S-1 so it has the weight and length for a good chopper . Enjoy it .

Didn't I see the same exact post in the KF posted by Psionic? :p

I'm sorry you didn't get more replies. My guess is that most FK users use the smaller knives.
F1, S1, H1, A1 are the most popular knives.

Be patient. I'm possitive there are A2 users also on these forums.

But since I'm an A1 user and a former Recon scout user I can tell you that the Fallknives are in a different league that the Cold Steels. Not just because of the steel used but formost of the blade geometry.
FK are knives. CS are knife-shaped hatchets. If your purpose for the knife is to fell small trees for shelters and stuff, they should perform well enough. If you also want to use it for cutting etc. get a real knife. Any knife....

Fallknivens are very highly praised in the wilderness and survival forum. There isn't even a comparisn between fallkniven and Cold steel.
Fallkniven destruction test.

I know its the A1 but the A2 is just a larger A1.

Bottom line, fallkniven is one of those companies that you just can't go wrong with, no matter which model you buy. The main reason you never got any responses is because you posted in the wrong forum, anything to do with fixed blades is better off in wilderness and survival.

Thanks a lot for your replies after all :)!
It's clear to me now, FK is much better than CS.
Next time i'll start about FK's fixed blades, I'll be in the survival/wilderness forum -> Thx for the tip ;).

I think that there is one knife that is often overlooked in this class of knives and that is the Browning Crowell and Barker Competition Knife.

As For FK being better than CS....I have seen torture tests done on both but never the two tested side by side with a non-partial testing crew and measuring instruments, not some guy going "this is as hard as I can bend". I know the argument is like arguing Chevy vs Dodge vs Ford...everyone has ways to back up their claims their favorite is the best but without scientific side by side testing no one really knows for sure.

My A2 was the sharpest factory knife I ever unpacked. It would cut hanging typing paper as fast as you could pull it. I took the A2 to a guy I know that has collected 100's of factory and custom knives and he was amazed by it level of sharpness from the Fallkniven factory.

As a chopper it was a little light to replace a good hatchet or machete but it was good enough for light shelters or to fell small trees in a pinch. The rubber handle stunk IMHO. In the end I sold it because I felt the A1 was just as good a big knife and not as clumsy to carry.

YMMV

Hi

I own a A2 since their first batch.

My favorite Big FB.
It has replaced my A1 since... (the opposite story from Riddle...)

Much better than the Trailmaster IMHO for chopping.
ANd I love the Trailmaster.
As the A2 convex grind will never get stuck into wood while chopping.

Also A2 despite its big size is handy and stay sharp as a razor.
Mine has survived intense tests and reviews since I own it.
Very solid. Very sharp. Reliable in all occasion. Cold weather, hot weather, salt environment.

Again the A2 is my favorite big fixed blade along with a custom Trailmaster which I consider more as a weapon.
My A2 has been used as a throwing knife, a survival tool in South America, a camp knife on the seaside...
It never let me down.

Cheers
JM

I guess having access to a BRK&T Golok may have influenced my decision.

;)

I see.. so Ur 'big knife' is the Golok. ..I understand, thats a very good knife.
I do like most BRKT products..
Anyhow:
I dont consider the A2 a large or big knife at all.. and I dont like to carry more than one fixed blade anyway. I always have a 3.5" blade folding knife with me (usually Spyderco Chinook II) for the small stuff.
I know, I know ... there always gonna be something better than an A2 for a SPECIFIC task.
For me the A2 is the BEST compromise for a single knife.
Im using it and abusing it for a long time. After all this, I wouldnt trade it for anything else.
I am using it in the woods.
I agree on the plastic grip... its not the best, but nothing what a $3.- grip tape wouldnt solve (thats what mine has on the grip).
I know nothing is beatiful with griptape on it but functon before beauty(!!) The blade is perfect for me. Not too long, not too short, not too complicated. For me it does everything what a knife need to do. I couldnt ask for a single better knife.
... i would trust... :D ..my life on this piece of steel..

It is actually a little ironic that everyone is rating Fallkniven so much higher than Cold Steel, when in the case of the high end stuff, the knives are made by the same people.
IIRC Fallkniven started out as the European distributor of Cold Steel products, and then decided that they could do a better job without being involved with Cold Steel.
I personally wouldn't buy a Cold Steel Fixed blade, but that is because they are either made in China or way overpriced, Fallkniven gives you a top tier product at a more reasonable price.

I have an old one made of solid VG10 in Japan. I originally thought I was getting a knife made in a Scandinavian country but I am very satisfied with it. Paid only $60 for it by ordering from a distributor through my dad's business. Wish I had bought several at that price. I broke off the tip (my own fault, I was chiseling off a lug nut cover made of sheet metal) but was able to reprofile it to a shape I think is an improvement on the original.

Fallknivens are made in Japan for the Swedish firm. Cold Steel's stuff was mostly made by Camillus or some other manufacture. Now with Camillus's closing awhile back, their stuff is made in Communist China, altough I cannot state whether all the line is made there or some in Japan. There seem to be alot of CS haters out there, but they do make a decent product, even if over priced on the high end stuff. I do not want this to become a "I hate CS because...." but most seem to object to their advertising methods and copying others designs. Still, Fallkniven gets alot of attention and use by people. Check out the Wilderness section under the Communtiy section.
