Fällkniven F1 - whittling and small tasks?

Hi

How would Fällkniven F1 compare to scandi grind knives generally when it comes to whittling? Im a bit concerned how the convex grind works, but then again it seems quite acute.

The most essential question is: can I make willow whistles with it? ;)
I don't want a crowbar, I want something that can do very detailed work.

How does the edge take twisting (while whittling for instance)?

I'd prefer actual field use and experience on knife.

Thanks a bunch!

I used my F1 to carve the spoon shown below, and have used it from widdling a sewing needle to skinning game in the field to building an entire camp. It really is an all around versatile knife. I've had mine for 6 years now and there is no knife I trust more. Also the edge of the spine is the best I've seen for striking a firesteel, or smoothing out wood after carving. As far as the grind goes, if you're looking to only use the knife for fine work, I'd suggest a flat grind (Rat 3 or 4 maybe). The F1 VG-10 will hold an edge just fine, but like most people I just find it easier to work a flat ground when carving. If you're looking for an extremely versatile blade, this is it.

Gravitas, that's some impressive looking carving!
Im very attracted to getting F1.. maybe I'll add it to santas wishlist.. or just buy it sooner! :p

Thanks for the compliment, and seriously on the F1 purchase...the sooner the better ;)

I actually just picked up the 3G version but have yet to try it out, it's about double the price but uses FK's powdered super steel. Given the hardness of ~61 vs 59 on the VG-10 version I'm assuming it's a harder to field sharpen but holds a better edge. I took my F1 VG-10 out to Montana a few months back and was able to sharpen it on river stones. It was a cool experience to realized the edge could be well honed on the most wild and natural hones available. Afterwards I carved and got a bow drill fire started in about 45 minutes which for me proved the knife was truely made for wilderness survival. My goal is to test this knife for tasks and sharpening in every conceivable environment. So far it has been all over North America and I have plans to take it down to Central and South America next year. Once I feel I've pushed it and myself to the limits I plan on making this one below my user. I'm sort of an F1 junky, but i think given the quality of their blades it's for good reason.
