I'm toying with the idea of a Fällkniven F1 pilot's survival in micarta.

They are quite costly but are owner's pleased with theirs?

Any drawbacks?

I don't own a Fällkniven but I feel I'm heading in that direction, generally favour Bark River knives but something about this Fällkniven makes me restless:D

Should I?

I love my F1; it really is a fantastic knife. The only thing that would make mine better would be a pretty Micarta handle.... ;-)

Go for it! I'm betting you won't regret it a bit.

Stay sharp,

I also saw blank fallkives blades sold, has anyone tried to make a micarta handle by himself, any pic?

wilgoy,
Just curious - why do you want the F1 in micarta?
For that price, you could actually get both an F1 and an S1 with the standard handles.

(As a side note - I have one green micarta and one black micarta handled F1s and love 'em. Also have two regular F1s, two S1s, an A1, an NL4, and an NL5. Can you tell that I REALLY like Fallknivens?!!!)

Regards,
Mike

I have a regular F1 and it is my primary survival/backpacking knife. Great blade and well worth the money!

I clicked on this thread half expecting to see that some folks had recommended against going for the F1. I was wondering what on earth they could find to say against them, because I have a some Fallkies and I can't think of one good reason why you shouldn't buy one.

Hey Guys...

Mike brings up a good point. I would grab one of the regular handle ones first.

I just purchased my first S1 a couple of weeks ago, and a F1 last week. Truly great knives at a good price. I'm thinking I need an A1 now. :D

I bought one recently.....yes its worth it. I mean you think "gosh its just a VG-10 blade in Micarta" its better than that. Its a pretty sweet knife. But others are right you can do 2 for 1.

OKBOHN thanks for that site, its got some sweet bark rivers.

Thanks for the input.
It's an aesthetic thing, I like the LOOK of the micarta with pins, looks like another couple of hundred dollars are going to disappear....Mind you, I pay in Euro so it's not quite so bad.But get your heads around this: I live in Finland next door to Sweden(also an EU country) but it's still far cheaper to buy a Fällkniven from the US even with postage and possible import duties:eek:

The F1 is a great knife. I prefer the Thermorun handled one for the better price to performance ratio, but the Micarta handled certainly is prettier. Can't go wrong with it, if the price doesn't bother you.

Buy both and compare :)

There is a third choice too, commission someone to make the handle of your choice, from an F1 blank. I saw the most amazing looking F1 in Orange G10 (all the good outdoors knives come in Orange too :))

I agree with this option and I would be interested in finding out if anybody had done this. I would like to try it myself, but not too many tools or hours to work with here in Iraq:grumpy:

The Fallknivens are so special because everything is right - the design, the grind, the materials, the heat treatment. There are prettier knives and sexier knives but very few that can outperform them within their design parameters and price.

Willgoy, Nothing wrong with branching out your options. Bark River and Fallkniven both make great knives. I have both myself. There is an S1 and A1 in my collection. Can't go wrong with Fallkniven knives at all. As far as the F1 with a micarta handle, beautiful......Abolutely love the way that knife looks.

Willgoy,
I have the F1 in green micarta and really love the way it feels and looks.
I also have somewhere around 12 different models of Fallkniven knives(some duplicates), so I guess that I really like Fallkniven.
BTW, I also have several BRK&T knives. You can't go wrong with any of the Fallkniven models...one of my favorites is my TK1 with the cocobolo handles and 3G steel....this is one very "cutting mama" and it almost never seems to need resharpening.

They are a bit to spendy for me. I think they are about 30 percent over priced for what I get.
