Unfortunately here in the US the race was on horrible network TV, again, with an announcer who knows nuttin' 'bout F1. Here is a quip from the press conference I thought you guys might like but did not see, thanks you Network TV:jerkit: . Here is the setup info from the post race press conference.
DC is David Coulthard, Scottish driver for F1 team Red Bull. He has not had a good finish for 2 years so this 3rd place was good for him and the new team. Christian Horner is the team boss. The reporter asks:

(Damien Smith - Autosport) A question for David: apparently on television before the race, Christian Horner said that if Red Bull scored a podium today he would jump in the harbour naked. Are you going to make sure he goes through with that?
DC: Well, he did tell me, when I was doing the slowing-down lap, that it was actually to jump in the pool at the energy centre naked so my advice was to give his ‘wally’ a good rub before he does it because if you are going to get photographed naked you want to look as favourable as possible.

I'm REALLY REALLY upset that it was on network. I completely missed it because of that. I watched qualifying on speed, then was upset that the race wasn't on today. Only later i nthe day did I realize it was on channel 2 looking through the guide. pissed.

that is pretty funny though.

I missed it too. I don't mind too much because it's usually pretty boring. It was good to see Rubens finish decently as well though.

What was the Michael Schumacher qualifying controversy all about? The announcers only mentioned it in passing when I was tuned in.

I set up my cheesy VCR but it didn't work, as is the case about half the time. Someday I'll have a TIVO....

Speed channel always replays the races that the networks get, usually a week later. Much better commentary.

Bronco -

Schumacher was on pole position as time was running out on the final lap of qualifying. He led by something in the neighborhood of .08 of a second. The problem was that there were several cars behind him on their last flying lap. One of them was Alonso, the points leader. Alonso was almost certainly on pace to take pole. It would have only put Schumacher in 2nd position. A very winnable starting place on the grid.

As Schumacher rounded a very tight corner on the circuit heading for the finish line (at about 20 mph), he unexpectedly failed to negotiate the turn and managed to stall his car in a position that forced all the other cars to slow as they passed him. This essentially ruined their chances at pole and secured that place for Schumacher. Michael claimed that it was purely accidental. Neither the stewards nor anyone else believed him and he was penalized by being taken off pole and made to start the race from dead last.

As a Schumacher fan and a tifosi (Ferrari fan), I have to agree with the stewards. It looked like cheating. This isn't the first time Michael has ruined his chances at Monaco with ridiculously poor judggement. A couple of years ago he was leading the race and, during a restart while warming his tires, he slammed on the brakes at the oddest moment and Juan Pablo Montoya ran into him.

I thought the commentary by CBS was terrible. Not only did the tape delay take all the excitement out of the race, Danny Sullivan and the lead commentator put me to sleep. I can't wait for Speed Channel and live coverage to come back. Varsha, Matchet, and Hobbs are teriffic.

One funny story about Monaco:

Maybe 12 years ago the race was being shown live. The video feed was european and the U.S. commentators were voicing over shots of Monace and the yachts anchored in the harbor by way of introduction. As a compliment to an image of a particularly huge mega-yacht popping up on the screen, one of the commentators pointed out that they were some of the most "exotic" he had ever seen. Just as the words left his lips, the euro feed zoomed in on the deck of the mega-yacht to reveal several euro babes sunbathing topless. Without missing a beat, his partner said: "And those are pretty exotic as well."

We have another chance to hear terrible US commentators during the coming World Cup Soccer .Last time they didn't know the rules or anything else !!! Anyway it was a race weekend and you could switch between F-1,Indy 500 and Nascar .

I switched between Indy and Monaco. I was pleased that Michael got his comeuppance for that trick. He is too damned good a driver to need to pull cheap stunts like that! It was like some years ago when he tried to bump Villeneuve off course in Spain. He is behaving like Ayerton Senna and not like the true world champion that he is.

I had been pulling for both Michael Andretti and for Danica Patrick at Indy. Michael finished 3rd, just behind his 19 year old son, Marco. Marco damned near won the race. Poor Danica had a bad car but did better with it than anyone else did with the Panoz. She qualified it faster than any of the other Panoz cars and she finished in 8th while the next best Panoz was 16th. THe Dallara cars had it all over the Panoz cars this year in handling and Danica had to run so much downforce on her car in order for it to handle that it was getting bad fuel mileage. This is what caused that badly timed pit stop. Oh, well, that is racing and it cannot be avoided.
