Its a sharpening Choil. Basically it allows for two things;
1) a Clean sharp edge to where the grind begins/ends in the ricasso area. Without it you will usually have a bit of a dull spot where the grind is started but the primary grinds don't get close enough to create an edge. This depends on how the blades are ground from the factory so it doesn't always apply in that manner.
2) It allows you to sharpen all the way to the end of the grind and past without marring up the finish of the knife. Basically makes it easier to run a stone to the end without hitting the guard or ricasso.
Function it doesn't have a real purpose, but I tend to use them for striking fire steels, if the spine on a blade is too rounded to use.
also if your really lazy and dont mind making that knife a beater (expensive as it is lol) it makes for a decent bottle opener
Sounds a bit risky to mealso if your really lazy and dont mind making that knife a beater (expensive as it is lol) it makes for a decent bottle opener

Plus why not to use a spine of the blade combined with your hand as a leverage point, save the edge for cutting.![]()
