Once again I'm looking to you guys for advice.

This time on the following knives:

Fallkniven F1
Fallkniven S1
Sere Operator

All are similar in price but does one stand ahead of the others.

This knife would be for general outdoor use. I also like the Fallkniven Frey but I'm not sure it's worth the price.

Thanks for your advice,

I have the F1 and S1 and they are my favorite knives. I prefer the F1 since I like the drop point more, and the blade length is just right for me. The steel is also very stainless and keeps a good edge.

phwl, thanks for responding.

I like both the F1 and S1. Tough choice!

I usually carry a folding knife in my pocket so one of these fixed blades would be used for tougher cutting chores and it would ride in my back-pack.

The F1 looks like it is well suited for fine cutting chores, dressing game etc. but is it suited for hard use as well?

Same question for the S1 but opposite...it looks good for heavier cutting but is it comfortable for fine cutting chores and dressing game?

I appreciate your advice.

Thanks,

I would choose F1 for really hard trip in wilderness. This is the great cutter and still near indestructible knife, in common sense limits of course.

The S1 is the biggest knife what I could use with sensible accuracy and the heaviest one I would agree to carry.

Operator blade shape makes it better stabber than cutter, definitely not my cup of tea for general outdoor use.

Each of them is too light for any efficient chopping and should be supported with hatchet going outdoors.

The Falkniven F1 has a thick blade for such a short knife, and should be as durable as they come. My only complaint about it is that the guard is very small. Fortunately, the rubber handle is well checkered, but that little bump of a guard makes me nervous.

I would be very surprised if anybody considers the F1 not up to "hard work". It is very very strong. Take a look at the tests on Falkniven's web site.

I would have to agree one hundred percent that the F1 will stand up to any kind of abuse or hard use. It is unusually stout for a short bladed knife.

In fact it might not be the most efficient cutter for the chores normally undertaken by a knife of this length. Many would prefer a thinner blade for the intended work. However, a survival knife needs first and foremost to be able to survive rough treatment, so the F1 should be a good compromise in this respect.

I would still like to see a bit longer guard, or some finger grooves, though.

I managed to find a knife shop that has an F2, couldn't find the F1 or S1. I agree that the guard on the F2 is pretty tiny (looks same on the F1) and it does makes me nervous but the knife appears to be very sturdy.

I think the style of the S1 handle and guard suit me better but, (based on the photo's & 5mm blade thickness) I think the grind would make the edge too thick to be a good cutter. It appears sturdy enough to be a bayonet!

I'm favouring the F1.

Does the handle material get slippery when it gets wet?

Thanks guys,

I have ordered several knives from Discount Knives, and have had only one minor problem. I ordered a Marble's knife that, unknown to myself, was not yet in production. When the knife did not arrive as expected, I emailed Discount Knives to ask the status of the order. There was no reply.

I cannot recall how many emails I sent to ask about the order, but more than one went unanswered. After about a month, I sent an email asking for a refund. That email was answered promptly, and the owner apologized.

Otherwise I have found service and prices at Discount Knives to be good. I would order from them again.

Bladematrix often has the lowest price around.......however!

I ordered from them once and will never do so again. Nothing horrific, just poor service. They took over a month to fill the order, didn't respond to my first e-mails, etc. When I did finally get the order (Ka-Bar Next Gen Marine), it was old stock (new, just sitting around for 3 years) from 2000. Now as it turned out that was OK with me since it meant I got the Sandvik 12C27 version. But it makes me wonder how old some of their other stuff is.

I think I don't mind paying a wee bit more at New Graham, KnifeOutlet, and some others for the much better service.

Sere Operator...blade stock is not bad, thicker than a Nimravus, which is considered a good field knife. Especially with the new sawback and S30V, it might make a decent camping knife.

believe me budy! Fallkniven are very, very worth the price! They generally use an excellent VG10 steal with full tang construction.Their kydex sheath are made of real kydex, not plastic and they've been tested in hardcore conditions here in scandinavia!
If u want a great allround outdoor survival knife try the A1 from fallkniven. We have it as "standart issued" after we tested it.
The F1 is a great knife too but a bit too small to be used alone.
An A1 with a good folding knife, then u can handle almost everything in the field!
Take care!

I agree with you oliver...

I always carry my SAK Soldier and some times a medium size folder like the Sere 2000 or similar and the F1 is just about the same size.

For a while I was leaning towards the F1 but I decided on the S1. I considered the A1 but I think I can do almost as much with the S1 plus it's a bit easier to carry.

The best prices I found for these knives are from www.discountknives.com. Their contact person, Brian, has been very responsive in answering emails.

Thanks for your advice guys.

Best regards,
