FAA Regs

Hey everyone. This is the first time I'm flying before a two week camping trip. I'm most interested to know if there is anything I should know about placing an RC-4, Izula, folding saw and multi-tool in my checked luggage. Has anyone had issues with tools such as these. Also, does the FAA care about firestarting items such as magnesium and firesteels.

Nothing else I'm taking should cause any trouble. Thank you for your thoughts.

As long as it is in your checked luggage you will be fine. I have done about 15 trips through different airports in the past couple of years and never been looked at twice for gear. I usually have different firesteels, machetes, SAK's, knives, and other outdoor gear that looks like James Bond tools!

Maybe some people have had different experiences.

I did a bunch of flying over the last year for the job (Army). Several tools accompanied me in the check-luggage and I never had an issue. My only recommendation is make sure they aren't easily accessible for the low-paid screeners who will often pilfer items just inside the top of your luggage bag or case. I had a small ditty bag with items much like RB mentioned...I then secured that to the inside of my case with some 550 cord; and it was underneath most of the clothing and my other gear. Sure, it can still be stolen, but having to unlock the TSA locks, dig through the clothing and cut or unzip a ditty bag is more than what most are willing to do. Just don't make it easy for them and they'll target somebody else. Throw my travel orders and other "gov't official looking" papers on the inside and they typically will avoid the hassle as well:D

Thanks RB and Rock6. That's was the answer I was hoping for. I will certainly take your advice and make them a little harder to find in my suitcase. Thanks again.
