Fabric Scissors for wife

So, wife does a lot of work with fabric. She makes purses and other such items. Anyway, she usually buy Fiskars Scissors and I try to keep them sharp for her. That works but she wears them out, or they break.

I'd like to get her a new high end pair, but have no idea what to get her. The important info, like type of steel, is not on the box or packaging. When I ask people at the stores what metal the scissors are made of, I get blank states. Or, "Stainless steel, of course."

Any thoughts? Anyone know more about scissors then I do (that would be almost any knowledge at all - I know nothing)? Or possibly a source of info where I can learn more?

Thanks, folks. Any, and all, info is appreciated. :)

KAI are some great shears, check out the 8" tailors or 8" dressmakers. Also Ginghers are popular.

Shears have a bent blade and are designed to cut without lifting the fabric off the table. Scissors are straight blade and have small handle holes for shorter cuts.

Also, check out the rotary cuters.

Thank you for the recommendations. I'll look into both. Shears are what she wants, then. Not scissors. Really didn't know the difference. My education continues. :)

The rotary cutters are great, but if she is making purses, the fabric may be a bit too heavy for them.

If she is working with synthetic materials (nylon etc) the. A hot knife may do - I use a portasol gas powered one to cut all my webbing and Velcro for my projects

My wife does a lot of work with fabrics and such and uses ginghers exclusively, to the point where she throws a fit if I grab them to cut something non fabric. My understanding is that they are excellent and very sharp.

Thanks, folks. Great info and much appreciated. :)

Leaning towards the KAI 10" model 7250 right now, but open to change.

Gingher shears are very nice. I have bought several pair off of Ebay that were new or near new for a fraction of the cost of anything close to the same quality.

For heavier purse material, you definitely want shears and not a rotary cutter. OLFA rotary cutters are nice for lighter weight material.

Side benefit, while your cruising the KAI site, get yourself a new knife and save on shipping!

I have some fabric scissors...What does your wife look like?

Oh wait...I thought this was a trade offer.

Never mind.

Followup.

I bought her the KAI 7250 10" shears and she loves them. It was intended as a surprise and she was indeed surprised and very happy. Thank y'all very much for the input and the benefit of your knowledge. I learned a lot and my wife got a great pair of shears.

Thanks! :)

The best scissors I have ever used are from the Zhang Xiaoquan Scissors factory in Hangzhou (canton) China

My father was in the textile business there years ago and commissioned a run of fabric scissors from them.

I believe they may be the oldest corporation in China extant

They also make slip joints. I have one that cost less than a dollar retail 20 years ago that is a really nice knife.

I have 2 kai scissors that I use for fly tying. They are outstanding.
