So I have been making knives for almost 22 years. I have posted on Facebook for nearly as long. As a matter of fact, I haven’t posted anything but my knives on fb in probably 10 years. Anyways, recently I have had people critiquing my stuff. For instance I had a pic of a knife that was Damascus San mai pre etch, and I said that it would look better after the etch and I had a comment that told me that Damascus is made by folding layers of steel, not by etching. Then I posted a pic of a curly maple handle that wasn’t finished and someone told me in all caps that the wood was in fact figured maple, not curly and that I should really know the difference. I finished the handle and showed him the result and haven’t heard back from him yet. On to the Damascus piece… I had someone tell me that etching it makes it look like a “snowflake toy” which I am not sure what it is. Anyways this all happened within the last few days and hasn’t happened in the last 10 years. Has anyone else had some Facebook critiques some up lately? Not sure what prompted all the trolls to come out of hiding.

Could easily be FB troll bots. Their purpose is to create drama for engagement in a discussion. More viewers, more adds. Being nice doesn't create engagement. Bloody bots are everywhere. Maybe even here.
But, maybe just new stupids...

FB and IG are my best sources of free and cheap exposure. Ive been criticized because I "dont forge" my blades, because i only showed the handle of a knife, because i have an 8 month waiting list, or dont "differentially heat treat" stainless steel so its tougher. There are "some people" on FB who are experts at every subject under the sun. It's best to not let them get under your skin.

the world is in a pretty f-ed up state of affairs, currently. People are justifiably on edge all over the place. Some places more than others. Bots aside, spreading a little empathy around these days doesn't hurt. If you can educate some people from time to time about your craft, that's always a win.

that said, I often ignore comments that aren't of interest to me. Just because someone out there has something to say in my direction, doesn't mean I'm required to respond. That's how I play it.

Take it with a grain of salt. Could be keyboard professionals trying to share their vast knife making knowledge from watching Forged in Fire.

I don’t have a Facebook, so I don’t know exactly how it works there’s but I I’d like for blocking someone to go both ways. I can’t see anything you post AND you can’t see anything I post. The ignore feature here only works one way I believe.

Keep up the great work Matt.

All the more reason to sell here, Matt. 😁 Cause we care!

I agree with Lorien Lorien (now I expect a response) 🤣😂

I agree with everything’s has been said. I was just a little taken aback by all the comments all at once. Like I said, I have been posting for years with no one telling me that what I’m doing is wrong. Maybe I should be grateful for the advice, but it was all wrong. I guess I should be happy and look on the bright side, my posts are reaching a whole new group of people! Thanks to everyone here. I know that at least in bladedorums the people who are commenting know a thing or two about knives!

Jealous of your fantastic knives Matthew.
Do the platforms not have a facility for posts to be restricted or moderated before publication?

There are lots of bots (fake profiles) on FB, plus there are LOTS of stupid people on Facebook. I am in some knifemaking groups and there is soooo much stupid being spewed about, it's not even funny anymore. Then you get the people selling Warizabad stuff and trying to get people to sell their stuff as their own.

I hate Facebook for business.

The issue IMO is that each group is ruled by its mods/ admins. There is a certain wood seller who has his own page and blatantly lies. He relables species, he lies about sci names, he convinces people that mid range figure is super rare, just the worst aspects of wood selling IMO. But there's nothing to be done cause it's his group and if you mention that what he's calling Satinwood is actually acacia, or that what he's selling as Brazilian Rosewood is actually east Indian, you are blocked and called a hater.

they are just trolls,as to how I would respond I would use sarcasm and say something along the lines of "oh exalted master of damascus and wood your insight is truly beyond astonishment, how did you know I was passing off fake damascus knives with and etched pattern and that the curly maple is just plain figured maple and there truly is no fooling you because no one can comprehend your geinus."

I know some people wont want to reply like this for the sake of being professional I personally believe is what go's around comes around and if the are trying to make a fool of you they should be fair game to the same treatment.
