Facing a real blade: Run or Fight?

Question for all of you out there, if someone pulled a knife on you, would you:

1. Look for the nearest exit and run like hell.

or

2. Would you fight. Trying knife taping techniques, disarms, etc.

I use to think that I would do no. 2, until I started doing knife sparring. What you can do when someone is feeding you is a lot different than when someone is coming at you real time, in my opinion.

I would now look for nearest exit and run like hell and if possible throw something at the person to distract them. I don't want to undergo major surgery and I'm not ready to die.

So, what to you guys think?

I´d try to run first, I could probably always turn around and start to defend myself if I had the feeling that the attacker was a faster runner. Or maybe I had a knife in my back. Who knows.

What you do, see, is you just use your amazing (patent pending) Super-Turbo-Ninja-Dethmonger skills (learned from Ninja Wannabee monthly) to simply grab you attacker's blade and use it against him. Don't you know the best weapon to have in a fight is the other guy's? And if you don't have your own weapon, then he won't have anything to take from you, so you'll be the only one with the weapon, after you take his.

Seriously, my neighbor thinks he can do this kind of stuff, as he is the person to whom the term 'ninja-wannabee' refers.

And, on the topic of this question, this is what he has said (direct quote):

"the closer we are, the better for the unarmed guy... why do you think that you almost always, especially with weapons, step into the attack?"

Aren't ninja-wannabees fun?

P.S., seriously, if you have the option, run, run, run. If not, the next choice is to get of a single cut, then run, run, run. The third choice is to get of a single cut, block one of his attacks, then run, run, run. Et cetera. That's my feeling, anyway.

Stuart, it's situational.
Probably gain distance and defuse.
If not fight, fight through, or take him out.

Some folks believe self defense is like a reprimand, you answer the threat.

You got it right Chad!

1. Look for a way out and beat feet if possible.

2. If you can't beat feet right off the bat, fight until you can or one of you looses ... whichever comes first.

Expect to get cut and do what you can to minimize the damage because you are right that you do NOT want surgery ... personal experience talkin' here. BTW, full contact sparring (with wood dowels and training blades) really blew away alot of my previous notions about what you can and can't do in real time.

Respectfully,

Dave.

When faced with an attacker wielding an edged weapon, the most probable response is to bleed profusely and fall down. That's why the most preferred response is to run if possible, fight if necessary.

run like the wind.
i carry a number of nasty surprises for attackers, but im not going to stick around to use them if i dont have to.

if i have to stand my ground, like im cormered or protecting my loved ones, then its no holds bared vicious and nasty and evil as possible.

if i got to do it, my commnader and vgar and sebenza and spyderco natives come into play, but id rather just get the fock out of their.
its not worth it in 99% of cases.

My right knee is weak, my legs get puffed up with water retention all the time...running ain't much of an option

Yeah Jim, that would be a nice answer, unfortunately, here in Hawaii, CCW are not issued.

I would take the opportunity to use the skills I've learned in a style I've been training in for many years, nike-jutsu.

In nike-jutsu you do whatever is necessary to get as far away from the situation as fast as possible. In other words, I'd run like the wind (sore knees and all).

Usually the first option is to get out of there. Beat feet. Use a barrier. But it still depends on the situation. My girlfriend probably wouldn't like it too much if I left her and her mom to deal with the BG while I ran. Do what you can to avoid a physical confrontation, but if you run out of options make the bad guy pay the price. The most amount of damage in the least amount of time.

A very situational question. I assume you are saying that I am unarmed at the moment of contact (otherwise he gets seven .40 S&W rounds, reload and reasses). Does our BG look like a healthy runner or a geriatric? Does he want some money or does he have that "I need to kill you!" gleam in his eye? Are we in the middle of a totally bare parking lot or am I standing near a pile of scrap metal? Is my car 50 feet away or do I have to run for 2 miles to be safe?

I always want to avoid the fight. Who needs the grief that succesfull self-defense effort will bring in our current society? With the armament that I normally carry the running option has to be clearly the best sruvival option or I will stay with the BG and face him and solve the problem right there.

Sometimes runnng is not an option, I don't think any of us would run and leave our children (or any children) to fend for themselves. Many of us are LEO's who can make a tactical retreat but must ultimately stop the threat. Hopefully those who need to be are trained and equipped to stop that threat.
I don't believe that disarming techniques would be my response however

Assuming you have no gun may be a knife, nobody to protect and you are 10 times better (how likely is that?) than the attacker: Would you bet your health and life for a 10 to 1 chance?
