Don't get me wrong. I love this knife to death. It's by far my favorite. My only complaint is the factory edge. I've heard a bunch of people talking about the hair popping edge their SOGs show up with in the mail. I got mine and I couldn't cut a shoelace with it. I have the Sharpmaker system and it was fine on the blade until about halfway up. Then, the blade edge becomes too wide for the sparpener to get anywhere near the actual edge. I also have a stone and guide set that clips to the blade and uses diamond stones attached to a guiderod, but the blade isn't shaped in a way that I can use it. Basically, I have no way to sharpen this knife unless I sit there and completely reform the edge with the rough stone by hand, which I don't particularly want to do. Has anyone else run into this with the or any other SOG knife? If so, what's the procedure? Should I send it back and see if they can sharpen it, and if I do that, then what? I don't really want to send them my knife every time it needs to be sharpened. I use it and restoring the hair popping edge on my daily use knives is a common thing for me. Anybody from SOG got any ideas?

You don't have a practical Course/Fine Norton combination bench stone? Christ, I can't believe you got a dull knife from SOG but that basic Norton combo will sharpen that knife. The knife was designed to be sharpened with a flat stone. You don't need one of those expensive Arkansas stones. This knife is designed for cutting and puncturing. You need a rough sharpen edge. I use the Norton IB8. I also use Meyerco Sharpen-It for SOG blade sharpening. But it is actually designed for flat stone sharpening in the field.

I have several SOG Knives, The Trident, and the Hunter Revolver. Both came SOG sharp as they say. The AUS8 steel they use stays sharp and sharpens easily. I merely use the fine stick on my Crock Stix and they are like new whenever I want the level of sharp (which is all the time.)

I use a $5 Smith's plastic thingie sharpener to get the edge, then use a mousepad strop to get the razor edge on my Recon Bowie.
The Smith's will reprofile the edge to whatever angle the little carbide cutters are set, but it works for me. That SK-5 steel is my favorite !!

Cheers,

Carl

Really? I have 2 SOG's, and they're both hair popping sharp. It doesn't stay that way if you use it too much though. The edge retention is overrated.

Why not just send it back to them, and let them sharpen it?

Give us some pics of the edge. I'd like to see the grind profile. It is, however, hard to believe that SOG would have allowed a sub-par blade to exit the doors. With the competition in the market these days, nobody can afford to push inferior products or factory seconds without garnering some frowning faces.
