Factory Edge Question

Hey folks,

I recently acquired a few TGLB's. After looking closely, I noticed that the two knives had drastically different edges. I typically sharpen my knives and though I'd sharpen the thin edge to be more like the wider edge on the black blade. However, the grey blade doesn't have much of an edge, width wise, for me to sharpen. What angle do you sharpen you TGLB; or any other Busse? Rather than re profile every blade I typically just touch-up the factory edge. Unfortunately, the grey blade doesn't give me a very wide edge to determine the exact angle it was sharpened at.

I have one more question. The black coating on the blade is quite textured and I'm not sure if I like it. The Tanker Grey version is MUCH smoother and makes the black coating seem like spray-in-bedliner. I assumer after some use it will smoothen out? Can any of you share you experiences with the black coating after some use?I just prefer a smooth/slick blade.

Yes it will smooth out and eventually wear off. Baton it through some wood and you'll see. :)

I think the black was called crinkle coat. Tanker grey always seemed to be smoother for me. Since you're not sure you like the black one send it to me and I'll etch and strip it for ya, then of course I'll have to keep it for services provided. Lol...they look great bro! Just use and beat them. 38° inclusive is what I heard works great for the TGLBs. Hope this helped man.

You can measure the height of the bevel and the width at the shoulders to get the bevel angle (it is a triangle after all).

The black coating must have some weight to it as well. I pulled out the scale and there is a 3.2oz difference between the two.

Different handle materials could be part of the weight difference. If I remember correctly, G-10 is heavier than micarta (someone please correct me if I'm wrong).
