First off, i'm not posting this to troll or talk bad about bussekins. i just want to point out the sharpness of the blades from the factory. in my experience i haven't gotten blades that are hair popping or paper cutting sharp (sharpness where you don't feel any drag when you slice a paper). even when i specified that i wanted it to be scary sharp it still didn't come sharp. again i'm not trolling. i'm posting this so maybe scrapyard or swamprat can level up a bit on their factory sharpness.

On most of these knives the edges are geared more for toughness than cutting. You can always reprofile it yourself, or if you didnt want to do that there are many talanted people on BF that will do it for you.

I understand that. some people say its like an "axe" grind BUT when Busse combat does limited edition knives even though the grind and edge angle is thick, they make it hair popping sharp. another example is bark river knives. I know it's kind of apples on oranges but they have very thick edge angles too and they make it scary sharp. WHY can't the kins do the same?

Not being able to cut paper doesn't necessarily mean the knife is dull, or not very sharp. My rodent 3 and Rucki won't cut paper worth a damn but can both produce very fine feathersticks from wood. A knife can have a great working edge on it even though it won't shave hair.

i agree but if the manufacturer says they produce quality products (which is true) but you send out a not so sharp knife then where's the real quality? from a customers perspective there is no joy opening a knife package and when you test it for sharpness, it's not sharp. i just hope if Dan or other busse upper management sees this thread, they'll do something about it.

One thing to remember is while Bark Rivers are made from fairly thick stock they are ground to very thin convex edges, and they chip. When is the last time you saw a Swamp Rat chip? It doesn't happen very often. The Rats I have gotten have all been "sharp" but they aren't like my Spydercos but they aren't meant to be. Another thing to remember when you compare a Busse LE to a Swamp Rat CG is that the Rat is meant to have to living hell beat out of it and survive while (the following is my personal opinion) the Busse LEs are not meant to be beat on to the same degree and end up being safe queens more than users.

Also if you want to hit up the upper management of Swamp Rat Josh is very active on this forum, he goes by Hindsight.

And the post below is why Josh and the Swamp is awesome!!!

Knife chop, first off let me apologize for the edge not being sharp. We have done a lot to improve our edges and with that said there should have been a sharpened by ????? (hopefully not me lol) sticker on the card board sheath. We did this so that we could put some accountability on the men and women sharpening. If you could send me a PM with the name, I can look further into why this happened. Again I apologize. If you would like you can send it back to the shop and we will look at it and resharpen. We take pride in what we are doing and any chance to learn how to make things better we take them.

I'm not a Swamp Rat fan boy but I will add that the Swamp Rat edges have very much improved over that past year or so in my opinion. Any that I have received lately have been very good. I would also like to add that the Bark River Bravo III in CPM3V that I received 4 weeks ago had a 1-2" area of a rolled/burnt edge on arrival. That is on a brand new, never used 17", 25 ounce knife alleged to be a monster chopper. That went all over me and was immediately returned. I would much prefer to get an edge that is a bit too thick then one that is burnt up and rolled. I have NEVER had anything like that happen on a Swamp Rat or other Busse/Kin. I can't say that with a few other brands and I can post pics ;)

I am not a "fan boy." Only have one, a Ratmandu. Got it just a few weeks ago. It came acceptably sharp. Shaved hair. Still had a thick edge. Was exactly what I expected. I have since thinned it out. No fault of theirs; it is the way I like my edges.

I will add, Bark Rivers are one of the very few knives I've been disappointed with, more than once. The only brand I've ever had to send back. The only knife maker that LOST the knife I sent back to get corrected. They sent me a new one, but as I recall, the one they lost was a prototype. I never did business with them again.

Bark River is not worthy of being compared to Swamp Rats' quality, IMO. Not unless they've stepped their game up a he**uva lot since I bought my last one.
