Factory edge?

I received my first BM today (mini grip s30v) and am disappointed in the degree/consistency of sharpness. I can make it shave a few hairs (under pressure) but only on one side of the blade. I honestly expected a ready to use blade that I wouldn't have to sharpen for a while. Was I expecting too much? Do BM knives usually need sharpened right out of the box?

It happens in mass production. Besides that it's better if you sharpen it anyway.

And if you haven't heard already, Benchmade have been well known for poor qc. But a poor sharpened edge can happen to any knife in any assembly line at any company. You just got unlucky.

Are the edges lop sided too? One grind higher than the other?

Anyways you could return it for a replacement. Ask the vendor to inspect it before sending the new one out if they even do that kind of thing. Or send it to Benchmade to be sharpened on the grinder again, or send it to a professional sharpener on the forum.

The edges are even. I just hoped I would have more time to practice sharpening before this knife needed it. Guess I better get to practicing so I can do it myself which is my preferred way of getting anything done (so my wife tells me).

What is your preferred sharpening system?

Don't practice on a nice knife. Buy some cheap Walmart knives and practice on your kitchen knives etc before hand and get decent.

I’ve usually gotten pretty sharp but not shaving sharp edges right out of the box. I just need it to cut. I have shaving razors for the other thing lol
On the other hand, when I do sharpen it, I do my darndest to get a shavubgvsharp edge. The practice is good for me.

Sorry to hear about your new Benchmade. If you look into Benchmade quality you will see many posts of disappointment with q.c. issues. You could send it in to them to sharpen it again.

The BM's I've had were usually paper shaving sharp. Sharpening is really a needed skill if you use your knife a lot. I dulled S35VN from 4 cuts on thick fiberglass insulation. Cardboard will also dull the edge faster than you think. If everything else is good, I'd keep it and sharpen it when you are comfortable with that skill.

If you know how to check for burrs, you might get away with a quick strop off of the rough side of a leather belt, or even the edge of a car window... or you could just send it in to BM whenever you need it sharpened.

I spent all evening practicing on my twitch 2. It only took me a couple hours (sarcasm) to realize to use only light pressure when sharpening. I need to learn muscle memory using ONLY light pressure. I found myself putting too much pressure on it time after time. This is definitely a case of less is more.
