There has been a thread for the last week or so on the custom forum on whether or not particular knives have have a soul.Does your collectipon have a production knife has a quality that you may or may not be able to explaine that you could call a "soul"?

My SERE 2000. Don't know if it's so much soul or just a bad attitude. Sometimes I swear I hear it growling at me.:D

Funny you mention that, becuase to me my small wood inlay sebenza has soul, with its G2 sheaths. I have been reading the thread in the custom forum, and to me, out of the 15 customs, and 100s of production knives I own, that is the one to me that has the most soul. I have no explanation for this so everybody back off:) :) :)

It is not a ridiculous concept to imagine certain of our blades have a soul. Knives have a special link to humans and always have. We are believed to be the only creatures in this world that possess a soul. Although other animal have adapted tools to their use (stones and sticks are used by several different animals) we are the only creatures to have developed cutting tools. In fact, the knife is the father of all our subsequent inventions. Once we mastered cutting tools we looked for better and better materials with which to cut. Soon metals were discovered and used leading to developement of even harder and tougher metals. Once we mastered metals we felt we mastered our world. Now we put men into space, a dream from the earliest times, but there remains one constant in the world of men. We still use knives. Sure there are all sorts of new blades we once never dreamed of but the basic function remains the same. In many ways man and knives are forever a part of each other. After such a long history I wonder if we have somehow breathed part of our own souls into our knives.

Then again maybe I am just full of sh!t. HA HA

My 690. It "sings."

I actually walkeed out the door with cash for a 710HS. Held the 690 and that's what I brought home...

if HI khukuris qualify as production but all three of mine have what I would call soul. The kamis really put something of themselves into these blades. Before they are shipped they are sprinkled with the kami's blood in a blessing ceremony. Each has a different voice.

I have an older Buck Ranger (nickel silver with wood scales) that seems to have a special quality. It's not the best knife out there but there is something about it that just feels good!

Hmmmm, a little....not much. I mean my old Puma Game Warden certainly had a style...at the time, and the same with my Case Cross-guard.

Think of it in terms of women. Janis Joplin had soul, buckets of it. But you wouldn't want to live with her. Britny Spears does not have soul, but who wouldn't want to....well, nevermind.

So, no, I can't think of a production knife that really has soul, with the possible exception of that Kershaw D'Holder hunter. But a factory knive can develop character, which can be better than soul in a lot of ways. I offer my Benchmade Nimravus Cub in M-2 for example. Over the years it has accumulated a custom kydex sheath, the BT coating is all but gone, and I have filed finger grooves in the handle to enhance stability when slippery. The knife and I have been through a lot together, with a few fine memories, and though it still does not have what I would call soul, it definately has a lot of character, and a fond place in my EDC rotation. Now my Phil Wilson Coyote Creek hunter has soul.

My Spyderco Wegner Jr sings to me!
Absolutely sexy to look at.
Perfect quality.
One of the nicest knives at any price.
Very soulful.
I think we're in love.

I don't think that a production knife can have "soul", but the "character" Steve mentioned is something I see in a lot of my knives, mostly in those which look used.

I get something off my Outdoor Edge Magna whenever I pick it up. Maybe not soul, nor character, but maybe attitude...

It's a big sucker for a folder and thus I usually won't carry it around, but I love to pick it up and 'play' with it!

My nearly 30 year old Schrade Old Timer LB7 in it's original sheath is sorta soulfull though....

I have only two production knives with soul. One is a Buck 110 left-handed auto conversion that says "I was tactical before tactical was cool". The other is a Benchmade Elishewitz Ares 730Bt that has pedigree. I'd agree that a 690 would be soulful, but as a southpaw I can't make it work. My BM Stryker comes very close. - Lee

Nope. Same with customs that come from dealers, or secondhand. Only knives I really "care" about are the ones that come straight from the maker. It's the people that make the difference for me, and the relationship with the maker is what makes a knife special. The rest are just hunks of steel with handles, no matter how nice they might look.

Can a multi-tool have soul? Seriously. (I don't think so myself, but wanted to get others' thoughts.)

You know, I have a couple that while they don't have a "soul" (I'm picky about that word), they almost always produce a smile for me:

My Spyderco Lum Chinese (I LOVE that leaf blade), and my Second real knife that I got from JoeSchmoe2000 in a contest:

My trusty, always there SS Delica II. I LOVE that knife. I have many knives, now, but none of the production pieces that I have- even the Lum- can come close to the great sense of joy that comes every morning when I strap my little Delica on. Slim, trim, and ready to rock n' roll. I even swaddle it at night in a handkerchief before I go to bed! Okay, maybe too much info, but I LOVE that knife!

Sincerely,
Anthony

Benchmade Model 45 and 48 Balisongs have soul.., and would have easily outsold "The Drifters" in total sales volume if BM never stopped making Balisongs... :(

Luckily.., now there are more :).., but only the 43DM, and 49SPL.., have soul currently.., we'll see what the Bali-Future holds...

I lied! :) Some of the other new ones have soul to I suppose, but time will be the judge of how much.
