Not new to folding knives but I think I recently got bit by the Spyderco bug and have been learning more about their PM2 line.

One thing I can’t get my head around is, why are brown micarta the only scales which don’t cover around/hide the frame edges?

For example:

It’s because micarta breaks pretty easy when it’s that thin and unsupported. I think they tried it the normal way in the past but had issues with breaking, particularly around the lock

They use full liners under Micarta because of warpage issues in the past on unlined models. G-10 and carbon fiber don't have those issues, so they use nested, skeletonized liners on those.

Interesting, appreciate the replies.

yablanowitz yablanowitz - Is that to say the liners of a factory brown micarta PM2 are different dimensions (larger?) than the liners of a factory black G10 PM2?

Yep. The liners on the Micarta are the same size as the outside of the scales, the liners on the G-10 and carbon fiber models are nested, so they are smaller than the scales and fit inside milled recesses.
