I have been trying to google pictures of the factory seconds but all the markings that I saw are different. Can someone tell me if this is a factory second mark? I don't think it is because of how small it is and the others that I saw were much deeper. Anyways here is a pic of it. Also, I got this knife off a guy on the for sale forum and he said it was bnib.

Sorry for the cell phone pictures.

That mark does not look prominent enough (to my eyeballs) to be a factory second mark, but it's hard to say. These marks are done by hand, and there is some variance.

Link.

Another clue is to closely examine the whole knife for flaws. If you see none, that's also a clue that its not a second, though some factory second knives look like there are nothing wrong with them.

I don't think it is either. I'm in the process of selling it and the buyer brought it to my attention. I knew the nick was there but didn't know what spydercos blem mark looked like. I think they should use another mark.

I dont know....BUT.... Does Spyderco even sell seconds??? John

Almost every year they have a seconds sale at the factory outlet, but only when there are enough of them. Anyone know what they do with the seconds in a year they don't hold the event? Keep them until next year?

AFAIK, the notch denoting a second is always on the right side of the blade. That ding is on the left, so it's highly unlikely that the knife is a second.

Yes. An occasional one may wind up getting used as an "organ donor" for repair work, but most would just remain on the shelf.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I contacted the person I bought it from and he has records from when I bought it new. Must just be a mark that got through QC.

QC seems to be hit and miss on these orange Dragonfly. Mine has an incredibly rough finish inside the spydie hole, including deep tooling marks. It tends to cut up my thumb if I use it too much in one day.

I kept it since the retailer I got it from sold out of the orange DF so I couldn't exchange it.

I was wondering that myself when I saw it on the exchange.

Jlomein, have you tried filing the inside of the spydie hole down with a round file? Might get rid of some of the bite.
