Factory seconds question...

I was wondering, I notice Camillus, Cold Steel, and a few others sell factory seconds. What about Spyderco? and even Benchmade? Are they just so good that they don't make mistakes or do they not sell the seconds to the public? I kind of like seconds, cheaper, make good users, etc... Anyways, I tried to search but found nothin', maybe I'm not using the right keywords. :D

A lot of companies (not just knife companies) distribute their "seconds" as freebies at coperate events, fairs, conventions... That sort of thing.

Benchmade uses a grey box for these (as opposed to red, blue, black or gold). They also use a grey box to send back knives after sharpening. This is to keep them from being re-sold as new.

Thanks for the info, boy I wish I could find one of those events and get lucky enough to walk away with a free knife :D

Spyderco used to sell theirs at a yearly event on-site. They all have a tang-cut to ID them as a second. AGRussell sells his on his website as does SOG.

I have seen lots of AG Russell seconds on eBay, with the definitive tang cut, and I have asked sellers if they are in fact seconds. The sellers said they were not, I was interested in the knife, so I pursued the matter, and explained how AG Russell identifies one of their seconds. The seller became belligerent, and said he didn't sell seconds etc. I was really interested in the knife, but decided to drop it. BTW, I bought a Recon Tanto second from Cold Steel, it is a POS, but there is no 2 stamp on the butt/pommel. Does this mean it is an original, or did they just forget to stamp the 2 on? From reading their catalog, it is common practice to stamp a 2 on the pommel.

I'm guessing that your points that most or all Cold Steels should have a "2" stamped on their butts these day? ;)

I have ordered a few seconds from cold steel. The pendleton hunter i picked up was scary sharp but it had blemishes on the steel and cosmoline i would guess in the scabbard, pain to clean out but all in all a good knife.
Also a peacekeeper, another scary sharp knife.
Cant complain about either one for the prices i paid.

Exactly what makes that knife a POS and why would you buy a POS knife like that. Looks like you've been here a month and have almost as many posts as I do in 6 years.
Yes, it is popular for some to bash CS on these forums. But rather than just trying to be popular, take some time to reflect and experience before making a post like that.
Even if I didn't have personal experience with CS product, which I do. And, even if I didn't believe that the Master Hunter - Bush Ranger - Trailmaster - SRK and Outdoorsman represent a standard against which other production knives should be judged, I would have to reflect on the following.

Over the last two decades CS has sold hundreds of thousands of knives. The majority of these made by long standing and respected manufacturers here and in Japan.
During this time CS knives have seen widespread use by outdoorsmen and servicemen. Positive reviews from the same in print, and more recently on the internet, suggest these knives are more than adequate performers.

Contrary to what some recent threads here might lead you to believe, knife / handle failures are quite rare.
The video? Well they were the first and to this date the only ones to offer such "Proof".

Busse, 10 years ago in print - without specifically mentioning CS, used the CS performance claims as a benchmark for promoting the performance of their own knives.

Cs product simply reflects the quality of the manufacturers they have contracted with.

Your Recon Tanto is not a POS. It is manufactured in the United States with quality steel by Camillus. Don't let some remarks here cause you to feel ashamed of your new knife. I am sure you will take many good years of use from it. And don't be soured on American and Japanese production sporting cutlery - at least not before you have some good experience with it.

Check out some of my other posts, I love my CS Kukri, I love my Voyagers, I love my Bushman (knife). I have used my Recon Tanto second and it has not performed as well as my other CS products, I had great expectations for this knife, and it failed, and I didn't even put it through the trials some posters here do. I am not bashing CS just to be popular or cool. Use your head and scan over my threads before you make false accusations against me. I'll lay it out, what makes me think my Recon Tanto second is a POS. Well, for starters, I shoved it point first into a tree, and the point curled backwards. Second, it came out of the bag dull, I sharpened it, got a professional to sharpen it, and still had problems. The handle is already starting to disintegrate. There is a noticeable curve to the blade, it curves to the right when looking at it spine first. It has no power when chopping small trees, shubs etc. Pieces are flaking off of it.

Everything you said is untrue, and I bought the RT because I thought I was getting a good deal. Obviously, I was wrong. Look in the wanted knives section, I am looking for a great deal of CS knives. I have not soured on them, I actually prefer American and Japanese cutlery, if I see that something was made in the USA or in Japan, I recognize that it is a good possibility that it is of superior quality. Don't put words in my mouth, if you wanna bash me, we can do it in Whine and Cheese.

Pissed off now

^ He's right, I've read some of his posts and he's not really on the ANTI-CS, Lynn is a fat **** bandwagon... All he said was that specific knife was a POS, any knife could fall into that catagory IMHO, it's about personal opinion on specific knives I believe. I could call a Griptilian or Delica a POS, that's my opinion, but I could still love Benchmade and Spyderco. Can't we all just get along haha rotf :D

The Fine Print: I don't think Griptilians or Delicas are pieces of poo, just using them as an example! Don't hurt me ;)

I'm suprised to hear the cs recon tanto went that far south, that's a pretty impressive litany of failure. Double whammy maybe, a cosmetic flaw got it a "2", before the quality control guys missed that it hadn't been heat treated? Could heat treating, or lack there of, cause a soft point, edge retention issues, and blade warp? Bad luck, I'm sorry your bargain fell through. I picked up one of their 2nd Master Hunters a few years ago and have gotten pretty solid service from it ( wish it'd been even better service, this fall all I got was laughed at, #%$#^ deer.)

SOG does a discout on their seconds as well, check their web page for details, the stock revolves.

ot: Nelson, I just finished up a 'ball in the cage' whittle, used a sak mostly, and spent a fair bit of time being aware of the scars I already have, and trying not to add to them by duplicating your newest ones. Shockingly, no leaks yet ( still have to do a little finish work, so I'm not safe yet)

silenthunterstudios, relax. I thought averageguy's post was pretty good, and not a knock on you at all. There has been a lot of CS bashing lately, and he only hoped you weren't falling for it.

You can't expect the rest of us to research all your posts before we answer you. You made a statement with no facts behind it, and he only wanted to point out that it didn't hold up. If you listed a few of the problems you had, he wouldn't have felt that way.

Peace!

I might've jumped the gun, I stand by what I said, but I will keep my temper in check, it is just a forum for people to say what's on their minds.

I just finished up the one that I cut myself twice while doing. Came out pretty good, but I broke one of the "cage bars" so I had to use a bit of wood glue. After I sanded it you couldn't really tell, so that's good. I'm going to try a 2 or 3 ball one soon.

Silenthunterstudios, relax  If the Recon Tanto you received was such a POS, you can send it to me ;)
