I think I recall reading some happy stories from the owners of SOG factory seconds.

The website (although admitting current listing would be vitually impossible) hasnt updated the list of availible seconds in over a month. I could be easily persuaded to spend more money if I heard from some people that may have experience with seconds and if it is possible, get a list of whats currently availible from Ron.

If this is something I should just simply call for, no sweat. The SOG staff are always easy to talk to.

Hi TheSkinwalkeR,

Alright...I’m ready to talk “Seconds.” :)

I’ve just updated the SOG Seconds web page. So the listing is actuate as of right this minute.

Regarding the “experience,” this thread over at KnifeForums.com in the SOG Forum is the only reference I’m aware of. Of course I’d love to hear more.

This program is my “puppy.” Several of us were instrumental in its creation. I have Loretta (who runs my Retail Department) handling the day-to-day operations. I formulated the policy and oversee what is considered a “second.” And I am picky!

Our goal in offering a knife/tool as a “second” is this:
quote from SOG’s website:

These knives and tools cannot be sold as new, but are in "new" condition. They may have small scratches or tooling marks, but nothing very noticeable and absolutely nothing that would impede the performance of the product. In some cases, the buyer might not even notice the blemish. In other cases, it may be more noticeable. There will be an assortment of items that did not pass quality control standards as well as items that have been slightly used and refurbished (bringing them to near-new condition).
They may not be pieces to put in a collection (by a scratch or divot), but they will be 100% ready to offer SOG’s outstanding reputation for stellar performance wherever the user requires.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have further questions.

I believe you just made a sale.

I just had Lorreta put in an order for one of those X-42 field knives. I have been oogling the one they have at the local shop and I thought I was gonna have to wait to save up the hundred plus $. Scratches and dings dont bother me at all, and I have good faith that if you select em yerself with your own standards that it will be of fine quality. I am excited about the prospect of putting this knife through some rigorous (yet reasonable) testing. I will post my assesments in the reviews forum here so everyone can get an idea of SOG seconds. I have a good feeling I wont be dissapointed and the Field Knife. I think is a sturdy tool to rate seconds by....something that would inevitably have scratches and divots by its very nature.

Pick me out a good one Ron.:D
Goin to Bryan Beery, Newport Beach ;)

Ron,
Even though the policy is not to hand pick, he wrote a great introduction, and appears to be a solid SOG man...
You are picky :D , and (best Martha Jailbird voice:eek:)"It's a good thing!"

I totally forgot about the no hand picking part of the text:o...I didnt mean it seriously anyways. The way I am reading into it, is that they have already undergone a selection process and I have pretty good confidence it will be a good knife sent to me regardless.

Now to just to wait for it to come.

............

I was even a SOG boy before I became a SOG man....getting that early start on my SOGitude:)

Hi TheSkinwalkeR,

You've only been in our forum for about a week or so and I'm really enjoying you. I think I'll let you stay! ;)

Bingo ... The screening process is quite good. To be honest, we spend more time looking at what we reject than what we don't!

There is a range to what I deem acceptable as you read above (quoted from our website). If you look at the photos on our website of the seconds, I found what I would consider either at the lowest end of acceptable or worse than acceptable for the photography samples (see below). Basically speaking, everything should look better than what is pictured there (and in many cases, a ton better).

Here are those images from our Seconds page:

This I like! :D

Hey Ron, what are the odds of a Tigershark becoming a Factory Second?

I'm not confident in the AUS-6 steel, but that only means that I'll get 3 of them. :)

What we recommend is that you give us a call. A little known fact is that we have an unofficial "waiting list." If a Tigershark comes available, we'd call you.

Also, if we only have one of something as a Second, we might not post it on our website. Heck, I might not even tell Loretta about it. It might go something like this little tale:
  • You call Loretta and ask: "Do you have a Tigershark available in Seconds?"
  • She says, "No, I don't have any on my list, but if I can take your name and number, I'll give you a call if one comes available."
  • After hanging up with you, she buzzes me on our high-tech intercom system: "Ron, I don't have a Tigershark in my Seconds stock, but I just had a customer call for one. Do we have one?"
  • I respond, "Loretta, hold on a sec." I open a desk drawer and rummage through. Nope, but I found a potential Recondo Second. :) Before I close the drawer, I find that balisong I’ve been missing for weeks and pause to play for a moment. :D “Loretta, you still there? I’m still looking, hold on.” I check the next drawer down; it’s bigger and holds bigger knives. Nope, but there’s my lost thermos.
  • “Loretta, I’ll have to get back to you.”
  • I have knives all around my desk. One of the “tragedies” of working for a knife manufacturer. So, I swing my chair around and look in the bins of knives behind my desk. Lo and behold, under a box of folders are some fixed blades...among which are a couple Tigersharks. I pull the first one out to inspect it. It is an older one without the powder coating and is well used. Darn. So I check the other one. Well, this one has possibilities. The cutting edge is in 100% factory condition, never been used or sharpened. I look the coating over. No scratches. Oh, there it is...there is a small imperfection in the coating; looks like a small hair was on the blade as the coating was applied. Barely noticeable.
  • I buzz Loretta on our high-tech intercom: “Loretta, I’ve got a ‘Second’ Tigershark for your customer.”
Well, maybe not exactly like that, but not too far fetched. Now that I’ve given you a glimpse to one scenario behind the scenes, no one harasses Loretta, telling her to look under my desk for Tigersharks. You will kindly allow yourselves to be placed on a waiting list to see if one comes available. If not, you’ll wind up talking with me (not a good thing in this case)! (I need my vacation!)

So again (repetition is good): What we recommend is that you give us a call. A little known fact is that we have an unofficial "waiting list." If a Tigershark comes available, we'd call you.

hey....Loretta said your desk was literally up against hers.....whats with the fancy high-tech intercom? :p

Thanks for letting me stick around Ron ;)

Hey...Did she say that? She's fibbing! ;) There's at least a few feet between them...well, inches...Ok, they touch. We use two cans and a string to conference! But she shoots rubber bands at and hits me in the nose (ask her), so I wish there were yards between our desks!

... and you're welcome. :)

:D lmao...I love this place...Get the Tigershark...You will not be sorry...Sharpest blade made,by anyone,at any price...I'm not sure what I need two for, just got another, but they will never be traded...and I've traded a bunch...also they look great with the Seal's and Pup's :D

I understand Mr. Ron revoked all "rubber band shooting privileges" over that incident!!!:p :D  ;)

"Mr. Ron" doesn't show up in the office often, but when he does, there's hell to pay! ;)

That's enough out of you, Rob. Let's keep the "beans" in the bowl. :)

Hey,
I thought you were on vacation!!??!! Weren't you supposed to leave the neighbourhood???;)
I edited my post...:o
Rob (with hand in cookie jar...)

Hey Rob, I'm just giving you crap about the "Mr. Ron" comment! ;)

I'll probably slip out of town starting Friday.

BTW guys

UPS came to deliver the field knife today. :D Unfortunately I was at work slaving away and wasn't there to sign for it. I am gonna head down to thier depot tomorrow and snag it.

I am licking my chops. Every time I examined it in the local shop I was in awe of its superb balance...dern thing just teeters on my finger right where it naturally goes. And then there is the prospect of examining a SOG second and if it is good (wich I have great faith that it is ;) )Lorreta will probably getting more orders for second-goodies.

Ron,

It's starting to look like you might need a vacation from your "vacation"...LOL!!.:D.:D.
