Factory Serrations: What kind of machines/grinding wheels?!?

Guys, how the hell are serrations made? I understand a number of people are like "do it by hand", but there is no way Spyderco pumps out the numbers they do all by hand. Or Leatherman. There has to be some sort of huge industrial machine. And I would like to know what kind of machine.

When you send serrations to be resharpened, are they actually done by hand? Or is it more likely they just put it into a clamp in a jig and let the blade do all the work. Does anyone have video of this?

If I were doing it, I would custom order a serrated center less grinding wheel from Norton. You can specify your pattern and wheel width up to 3" I think..... off to check.

Edit. Searching from the phone sucks.

I am pretty sure it is a single machine grinding process with one stone. The blades are locked in place and done in one pass.

Never been a fan of serrations (unless it's the entire blade), but combo edges are almost always done wrong. It's my opinion that a combo edge should have the serrations at the tip, with plain edge toward the back.

Getting a custom wheel for your own design serrations (think Veff) is a fantastic idea. Supposing they work well it's another area where one can stand out.

You can get a cheap electric chain saw blade sharpener from HF and modify it to make a serration cutter. It takes a bit of engineering, but the resultant tool will quickly put the serrations in a blade one at a time. You can shape the cutting disc to the size serration you desire.

That said, unless you plan on making a lot of serrated blades, a few chain saw files and a matching size brass rod ( and maybe a triangle file) will cut in serrations nearly as fast.
