Factory sharpening...

I was just wondering what type of system (or systems) the major knife factories used to put the finished edge on the knife? I have only been in one knife factory (Bear and Sons in Jacksonville, AL) and never really saw their system

Belt sanders from what I gather, maybe even a little stropping:confused:
This is something I would like to see shown on tv programs like on the Discovery Channel where they show how things are made. It would be more entertaining than watching how buttons are made:rolleyes:

Belt sanders+buffers are common, some also hollow grind the edges. This is one of the reasons that people often see a dramatic increase in performance after they are sharpened.

I find that sometimes the factory edges on some knives are so good that I get frustrated that I cannot recreate them. I have a few knives that were very sharp brand new, but I couldnt create that edge again (i'm no novice sharpener either)

Some knives you just cannot WAIT to get home and take your stones to.

I know the Ontario/RAT line all come hand sharpened. I don't know how she does it all day long but that is her job. This is why the bevels are sometimes different with the RAT line of knives

I agree with Tanto Fiend. I would love to see a hour on Modern Marvels (on Hist channel) devoted to factory and custom knives.

There was a Modern Marvels on axes knives and swords that aired not too long ago. It was really cool. It showed kitchen knife manufacturing, and I believe an inside look into the operations in the Buck factory. It also showed the shop of swordsmith Paul Champagne, and showed him forging and heat treating sword blades. Alot of history, and scenes of hand to hand combat with blades. Good show.

The show Hands on History also had a look into the Buck factory.

Theres a show with John Ratzenberger on the travel channel called Made in America, and I believe he also visited the damn Buck factory. He also visited Cutco, and it showed their stuff.

The Food Network has a show called Epicurious, and they made a visit to the Laguiole shop. It showed them forging and finishing the knives there.
