Fair market value; Sebenza example.

One of the most common questions I get is "How much is my balisong worth?" There's rarely a weeks that goes by without at least one such e-mail.

So, I wrote a short essay on how I estimate the value of a balisong knife:

So, let me know what you think?

I checked the site, but could find no indication of “FMV”. I can tell you that the going rate for a pre-owned, NIB Large Plain Sebenza for sale on this Forum is about $275.00. If you offer one for $250.00, it will be sold in a matter of hours. If you try and sell one for more, you will have a bit of a wait, and if you have the gall to try and move one at full price, just forget about it. There are almost always Sebenzas in stock with one of the reputable on-line dealers, and why take a risk of buying one from a private seller without the guarantees that a full time dealer has to offer?

In general, $275.00 seems to be the magic number. I would be surprised if this auction topped out higher than that.
