It has come to my sad, unsurprised attention that someone is producing forgeries of the Fairbairn presentation Shanghai daggers. Further, someone has produced copies of Fairbairn's Cobra fighting knife. To my knowledge, these have been produced by someone who has never handled the originals. This is evidenced by (a) disparities in choice of materials, (b) disparities in features not depicted in photographs, and (c) obvious differences in workmanship between Mr. Solntseff and the forger, who should've known better than to do this, and I say this because I believe in this case the fine line of reproduction versus forgery has been crossed.

Why is this any sort of surprise....Lots of knives are counterfeited every day, mostly in China....

Are they trying to pass them off as original, vintage knives from the 1930s / 1950s, or are they just reproductions of the design? "Forgery" generally involves giving a false provenance to something. Since original Shanghai daggers made by Solnsteff are incredibly rare, it's a very different thing to make a reproduction and sell it as a reproduction at an appropriate price (which is pretty much accepted in this genre) than it is to try and sell something made last week as a 90-something year old survivor (which is fraud). Are they selling for prices comparable to originals?

The authentic Shanghai knives were made in China, too. ;)
