hey all;
i'm going to be getting myself a Fairbairn-Sykes, mostly because i like 'em (an MoD/NATO issue one).

just wondering if anyone has used them as a thrower? how do they go?

i've heard they don't stand up too well for repeated throwing and would value some opinions.

They are quite handle-heavy, which can be compensated for with practice.
They have very fragile tips, which cannot be compensated for with practice.;)

aha, ok. it's an issue with the tips holding up.

schweet, thanks for that. i won't bother with an MoD issue one then (i dislike black blades) and go with a nice rosewood/bright blade.

i actually wanted the F-S to use as a 'dispatcher' to kill wounded game (a lot of hard core pig chasers i know swear by them as a sticker).

i'll get something else for throwing.

I agree completely. And even if you get tempted to throw it into a soft target, like a cardboard box, it'll eventually pass through the target and hit whatever is behind it...and fracture the tip.

just FYI: i use a cardboard bale from a supermarket box compactor as an archery target and it works a treat at pulling up ~300fps arrows.

i was planning on using the same bale to sling blades at.

Watch out for any metal bands on 'em.

True story, 1987.

I am attempting to demonstrate to some folks my throwing skills. I chuck a filet knife at a grocery store bale. Sticks twice, perfectly. Third throw, it hits a metal band, and bounces back right at my face.

Instinctively, and foolishly, I flick my hand up and catch the knife by the blade in my hand...not cut: the edge of the filet knife is caught perfectly between my fingers, about a foot from my face.

Small crowd of onlookers goes wild with approval. They thought it was one of the coolest things they ever saw. In a flash, I realized they thought it was totally intentional.

So I waved, said that was about the coolest trick I knew, and gave the knife back to the owner. My pulse was pretty quick by that point.

hehe, lucky boy! pity no-one got THAT on video....

FYI: i tie the bale down with string then wrap it in copious amounts of cling wrap.
