Hello all,
I just wanted to introduce myself. I'm a pretty new member to BladeForums, but have had a fascination with good knives ever since I can remember. I've just never owned that many. But, I've really been enjoying learning a huge amount about knives and their care (sharpening, modifying, embellishing, etc.) on this forum. It's great to find a bunch of people who are passionate about my newest obsession -- and I've had many in my time, though my wife does her best to keep me in check. She thinks it's hilarious that I've been watching knife review videos on YouTube.
Anyway, I thought I'd run you through my modest collection really quick and mention a couple of things I like in knives. I own two Griptilians -- a mini and a regular-sized one, a Spyderco Dragonfly (I'm pretty sure it's a Dragonfly; I've had it for many years), a Spyderco Native, an ancient Buck clip-point fixed blade that rides around in a plastic bin in my car as a "just in case" tool, a DPXGear HEFT 4 Milspec that I've been really impressed with and is my go-to wilderness knife, a couple of nondescript SAKs that I unfortunately mainly use as bottle openers and one or two cheap Gerbers that are nothing to write home about. I do own a really great set of Henckels cooking knives that I received as a wedding gift in 1992 and have worked hard to keep in good shape with my Sharpmaker. (See a Spyderco theme running through this post? I live only about 15 miles away from their headquarters in Golden, Colo., USA, Earth).
At this point, I have one knife on the way, which should arrive here from an online retailer in the next couple of days -- a Spyderco Tuff. I know this model has been out for a couple of years, but I saw one for the first time on this forum a few weeks ago and fell in love. I made the short trip to Spyderco HQ earlier this month to check it out in person and decided I needed to own one. Then I found a great deal online and pulled the trigger. I'm very excited to get it.
I typically don't put my knives through really heavy use, just the regular day-to-day uses (my Native is my EDC outside of work, and my mini-Grip rides in my messenger bag with me to and from work every day). But there have been times I've put them to hard use, and so I expect them all to perform. I think I've put together a pretty good collection for that kind of ownership -- though I've been trying to sell the large-size Grip locally without much luck, as the Tuff will take its spot in my collection. Both Griptilians have stood up to everything I've thrown at them; I'm a big fan of Benchmade as well as Spyderco, and have become really interested in ZT, and regularly drool over some of the videos of custom-knife reviews I find on the web. I love fixed-blade knives for their simplicity and utility, but I don't spend enough time in areas where they'd be put to good use to grow my collection in that area, so I'm concentrating on folders.
I have really enjoyed lurking on this forum and occasionally posting a quick note in a few threads. I hope to spend more time here in the future, as long as the checkbook (and my wife) can take it
.
I look forward to some more "active lurking" and maybe getting to know some other knife aficionados through this forum.
Happy holidays and take care,
Jon
