Fake endura?

Took my Christmas present out for a good fondling tonight when I noticed something that didn't look quite right

That third torx screw closest to the bolster looks unfortunately out of place. :thumbdn: It's the only male screw on that side. I went to the spyderco website and looked up what the knife was supposed to look like. There was no third screw in the jigged bone at all.

The knife was bought on ebay. I'm not exactly sure about the price that was paid. It definetly wasn't full retail, but I know it wasn't cheap either.

So what do you guys think? I think I know the verdict, but I would love to be proven wrong. Here's some more pics.

Also, now that I think about it, the gimping is pretty weak as well.

Looks fake, definitely no torx in that location. The jigged bone looks odd too. The one I'm looking at online has gold titanium bolsters with black coated pivot and torx through them. Two stainless torx through the bone scales.

ETA:

It looks legit, but I am confused by the third pin... I have the blue jigged endura, and the scale has a slight gap in that spot. Maybe the previous owner did that to solve that problem. I used epoxy and a clamp. The gimping is really strange though....

What's the gimping like on yours? Is it like a normal delica/endura? It doesn't feel the same on this one.

The torx are only on one side (the non show side), his has black hardware, the light throws off the color of his bolsters and hardware. The first pic he posted looks the best. I say real with previous owner mods.

Very possible, looks like it's positioned to go through the milled out part of the liners.

I just went and checked, and it's actually on the smoother side like yours.

That makes me feel a lot better. Do you have the line running down the center of the spine as well? And I took a look at that third screw, the hardware appears to be a little bit different from that on the rest of the knife, and it's seated a little deeper in the scales than the rest of the hardware.

I have the same knife -- everything looks identical except for that extra screw (same damascus pattern including the center line, same coloration on the titanium and bone, same bone jigging pattern, same file work on the liners, etc.). Jimping lines are also spaced a little bit wider than on some of my smaller Japanese spydercos. I got mine from cutleryshoppe.

I'm pretty sure yours is an original with one fairly obvious mod -- the extra screw. I think there are a lot of elements on this particular knife that would be very difficult to get just right on a cheap copy.

Thanks for the input guys. I don't see how this could be a fake now with the reputable dealers that have knives just like these, and what would have to go into it to make a fake. It's just really strange.

glad to see that it looks like you do have the real thing after all.

as a knife fan and Spyderco fan, it's infuriating to see how much counterfeiting is going on out there - puts a lot of pressure on knife fans and creates a lot of mental anguish for folks who are just out to enjoy a simple hobby. if these sickos out there have enough skill and time and the tools to create such convincing knock-offs of Spydercos, why don't they just set up a legit knife company and make real knives?

Hey Guys,

I have 3 of these knives in stock and this post made me curious. So I looked them over and did a little research and the results are both patterns are legit and real. They added the additional screw after there first run when they realized the scales did not sit flush and pulled away from the frame without it.

So if you have one with just the 2 pins it was from the first run and if you have one with 3, it was after they fixed the flaw. Hope this helps as I know you really need to be careful where you buy your Spyderco knives now a days!

Thanks for the info, it's much appreciated.
