Hey fellas,
I wanted a FIRSTEDGE 5150, but I couldn't seem to find one from any retailer. I found one on EBAY so I purchased it. However after I purchased the knife I heard that there are fakes of many higher end knives are being copied and sold as the real thing.
Can anybody tell me how I might be able to be sure that I have a REAL FIRSTEDGE knife?

A few words of advice-

1. Research the knife you're thinking of purchasing BEFORE you purchase it. Like asking here first.

2. Beware of ebay. From what I hear, they don't do anything about people selling fakes on their site.

If the knife is on it's way, post pics when you get it. That's likely the only way anyone can tell if it's real, short of physically examining it.

:)

It would be helpful if you posted the listing (ideally before you buy the knife) so people can adjudicate the veracity of the article.

Thanks for the advice. I love hand made knives so I didnt realize that there was such a large fake market out there. I have typically bought my knives directly from the guy that made it, but I just wanted a FIRSTEDGE to take out in the woods. Now I am scared this is not real. It seems very tough and solid but I have not put it to any test. I have read there are some very good fakes out there.

The sheath is another way to help determine the real thing from a fake. From what I've seen, fakes often come with sheaths that are different in some way from the ones that come with the real knife. The fakers don't always bother to make an exact reproduction of the sheath.

If the sheath you received is identical to the ones provided with the knives sold by legitimate vendors, then that's a good sign you have the real knife. Not a guarantee, but a good sign.

***The sheath does seem to be exactly the same. It even has the metal liner between the kydex like the FIRSTEDGE type

Those are the pics from the auction. So far most of the suspected fakes I'm seeing aren't the black versions, but the satin/bead blasted type, but the fakers are always upgrading.

I looked at the same model knife on BladeHQ and Knifecenter, both of which I consider reputable vendors, and the only difference I can see between those knives and the knife tltt posted above are the stars underneath the company name "Firstedge".

At Knifecenter the knife they show has one star, at BladeHQ the knife they show has two stars. The knife pictured above has no stars. Everything else looks identical to me, even the pattern of the G10 handles, the handle screws, the shape of the sheath and the stitching pattern on the sheath.

I wouldn't declare the knife above as a fake because of it having no stars as I don't know what the stars represent. Perhaps they represent which batch of knives it came from (which generation). Maybe you can contact the maker and ask them about the stars. It looks to me like they have both a Facebook page and an Instagram account.

Wow, thanks for the review! Thanks for the advice too!! I did send them a message to their Facebook account but I have not gotten any response. I have not been able to find a good email address or website other than FB for FIRSTEDGE. Yes it sure would be good to know what the STARS stand for, and if the absence of any stars has any meaning. The absence of any stars and the fact that he say it is new but he does not have the box are the two things that have me suspicious.
