These are now showing up on ebay. I let John know and figured it would be best to share. (Not that any of us would think these are the real deal for $46.99 from China)

Ebay Description: Custom Aus-10A John Smart Survival Hunting Bowie Fixed Blade Knife 60 HRC Young

(Auction listing comes up when you search "John Young Knife")

I see the seller also has a fake Brend knife for sale as well. I reported it, but would guess that it sells before they take action. Stinkin' counterfeiters... should be shot.

To my great surprise, I saw an identical knife for sale in a camping supplies store in Miri, Sarawak, Malaysia several months ago. Priced at about USD150. Quite well made and finished. Knew it had to be a fake because there was no way that a real John Young would be at that price because some one who had paid for a John Young would know his stuff and would never sell it cheap off a counter.

That shop also had many fake Striders and Extrema Ratios.

Was quite surprised that some one would actually fake a John Young. After all, John Young is not a "flavour of the month" name and only appeals to a particular segment of collectors/users. Also, the people to whom a John Young would appeal to would also know that what they are looking at is not a John Young.

A form of flattery I guess. I know the Chinese were also faking Loveless' and imagine they just look for high-end customs that sell on ebay as templates for their piracy. Funny thing is this copy is kinda cool looking as is the sheath they sell it with. I am a huge fan of John's work and copyright infringement and misrepresentation just suck.

When I called John today he was as good natured as always and laughed it off.

I have a Gold Rolex for sale for $29.95 btw! :)

I just can't fathom why?

Make a knife, sell the knife. Loveless design? Pick a good one and make and sell it. Do a decent job on the grinds and handle finish. Decent job on heat treat and geometry.

Why attach the name of some one to the knife and make it criminal?

A knife in that size, shape, and materials would sell like hot cakes if the geometry and heat treat were decent. Without any need to steal any one's good name.

There are literally thousands of designs that are available for use without infringing on others.
