Fake knives

I just read the post in the Emerson forum about the fake Commanders that were being sold on eBay. I happened to buy several of those knives without thinking twice because it never even occurred to me that there could be fake knives out there due to the complexity of design & materials.

Does anybody know of or had any experience with other fake knives out there? I'd like to know what to be careful of.

Thanks.

Danny

Most popular designs are being ripped off, generally in China with substandard materials. Sometimes the knives aren't an exact duplicate, more like "inspired by..." and sometimes the knives are nearly identical down to the markings.

It does pay to be careful and ask questions. Buying from a dealer is a good idea. But merely being aware of the existance of fakes will keep you from being ripped off. Even post a quick question here before purchasing.

You should browse the posts at Bernard Levine's forum, particularly topics about historic bowies, which are often targets of fraud.

Best Wishes,
Bob

Have to watch what you buy on the Bay. I'll bet you got a super low price on them though so the damage is more emotional than financial.

If it sounds to good to be true it probably isn't.

There are lots of knock-offs out there, but you don't often see counterfeits. At least not in the world of knives. It happens all the time with watches, blue jeans, sun glasses, etc., but I have only seen this a couple of times with knives.

The counterfit of the Emerson knife was the first time I had heard/seen this occur with modern "tacticals." Usually knock-offs are seen.

Now, when it comes to Case, Remington, etc. (the "collector" knives) and 19th century knives, counterfitting is more common.

Take a look at Mr. Levine's forum.

I must admit, I find this new development rather disturbing.

Counterfeit knives are alot more common than many think. My father collects U.S. Military knives and there are alot of fake knives and particularly sheaths out there. It is only a matter of time for the fakes to appear when a market in any type of product is developed and tactical knives are now common and they can be pricey. Add collectors/knifenuts to the mix and it becomes fertile ground for the faker. I have seen this alot with my other obsessions in antiques there is no reason to believe the knife industry is safe from this as long as there is money to be made. Stay sharp!

I bought a couple of fake Kershaw Whirlwind copies at a flea market a year ago. They were $ 5.00 ea. and marked EDC made in China. I'll admit, I'm not a discriminating user of knives, and since the copy operated exactly like my real Kershaw, I planned on using them as a knockaround knife in place of my Kershaw. I found out that quality DOES matter. Parts aren't parts and this particular copy wasn't suitable as a replacement for my use as a pants pocket clip edc , for two primary reasons. The handle material was a rubbery material with a non-slip surface instead of a smooth hard plastic like Kershaws, so it was too tackey and hung up when I tried to pull it out of my pants pocket. The second reason was the pocket clip had a stronger spring, this was great as far as security against accidental loss, but again made it a pain to deploy the knife. I tried to carry the knife for a week, but it just wasn't working for me and they ended up in a drawer.

The irony of this was after 10 years of edc carrying, I finally did misplace/lose my Kershaw Whirlwind about 6 months after buying the copies. I tried to use one of these copies, but after a week, I got on E-bay and picked up a used Kershaw Blackout for $ 28.00 to replace my lost Kershaw. (the Kershaw was 'real' and sold with a box lot of police, 6 impounded miscellaneous knives. The other 5 knives were basically junkers, so I gave them to my 15 year old son.

I saw an even more disturbing problem last night aat the local Target store. I saw a Gerber that was a blatant, obvious copy of a CRKT folder, the one similar to the M-16 but with a spear point instead of the tanto.

That was just a real disapointment. Gerber was at one time one of my favorite brands. A real shame.

The model was an Evo Fine Edge.

Military kukri (khukuri, khukri) and other UK military knives are being faked in India. The quality is poor, the scabbards/sheaths are often too good, and the markings are often not correct, but eBay pictures and inexperienced collectors combine to cause many of these fakes to go for prices appropriate to the real deal. When what is doubtful is combined with payment by money order or Western Union only, RUN!

Can you post a link to one of the auctions, if they are still listed?

Copies or counterfeits? Counterfeits would mean it has an Emerson logo/name on it. Copies are just design robbery.

That seller doesn't currently have anything for sale and has "private" feedbacks which is suspicious, but curiously has a 100% feedback rating. Has no one complained about the fake knives or did everyone leave a positive feedback before realizing they were fake?

I don't think anyone has left negative feedback because they think that the seller was taken in by the person that sold him these knives. He has promised to give everyone their money back, and if he does then it is unlikely that any negative feedback will be left.
